I most generally sell outright. Make more.
Trade in they will lowball you. Yes you can counter, but the truck I just sold they offered $23,500 trade in. Sold for $29k outright. $5500 more!
My last white RC Ram, sold and put $5000 down on the 2015.
You can try trade in, but see what its worth, and expect to give it a few weeks on your own first. You may get way more money.

You can certainly do this. I know I have in ~30yrs of buying vehicles. Problem is, you are not going to get a rock bottom price for the vehicle you are buying and top dollar for your trade. The exception is if you're trading in a high demand vehicle for a low demand vehicle.

Then you walk away from the deal.

know your tax rules, cause you can save tax on the difference depending on state. Here is NY at 8.125% it is a large savings that sometimes kills the argument of a private sale.

Not that I want to pick a fight here but you don’t HAVE to lose at a dealership.
Private sale for my 2014 Ram 2500 4x 6.7 with 98k was $24,570.
I negotiated the living **** out of that trade in, post negotiation of my new truck, and got $27,000 sight unseen for it. When they seen the service records and how immaculate it was in person they threw an additional $500 on it.
Now, I ONLY do business with Dave Smith in Idaho. I won’t even shop them.
My $79,900 msrp 2017 mega cab I beat them down to $65,600 WITH power steps, Bed liner, dealer installed 5th wheel group, floor mats, tint, and paint sealer. Nobody can touch that. Nobody.
I carried equity into the trade, which I have done for the last 3 trucks, payoff on the 14 was $17k.
We are now at $55,100 for an $80k truck.

Pretty fair deal in my opinion and I currently have $9k in equity in this one including depreciation. But I didn’t stop there either.

When I walked out of that dealership I beat his ass all the way to the door.
Free aftermarket gas cap
Took some shirts
Took some hats
Took his note pad
Took his pen
10 free oil changes
Even took my own $50 referral fee

Seriously. Beat him down.

Yesterday I bought my wife’s Jeep and he knew what was coming already.
Put $500 down plus a bit gem the trade in.
Msrp $42,986
Out the door including tax $34,271

I beat their finance guy down for an hour over 3/4 point of interest on my loan. Made them eat the 6 year unlimited warranty, and the GAP.
They have a choice to make, say yes or say no.
No for me doesn’t necessarily mean I walk away from the deal it just means I WILL beat their ass until I get 50% of whatever I’m asking for, just maybe not the whole 100.

Long story short is, there are dealerships that are not willing to work with you and there are dealerships that will do whatever they can. Just have to invest the time to locate the ones that will work in your favor and not against it. By favor I mean, you walk away thinking you have gotten the best deal, and they make a few bucks too.

When ya sell full bore retail and get all trade ins for wholesale, kinda hard not to make money.
Also kind of hard to get a lot of sales.

Not true. late model trade 2014 or 205. how muchless would oen expect to pay, private seller, vs dealer? No one is gong to pay the same, or more, than a dealer truck since dealers are always higher. and because the private seller, once sold, is done with the transaction, forever. truck blows a tranny? tuff ****. However, with a dealer, the truck blows a tranny, the buyer can always threaten legal action or public disclosure or ridicule, dealers do have to worry about afterbirth, private sellers do not , hence there is a price difference paid, for like vehicles, depending on the source.

so, how much of a difference, varies according to area and vehicle. next, there is such a thing as trade-in allowance, which is deducted from the new vehicles selling price, which in turn lessens taxes paid on new vehicle. 7% sales tax,is a chunk of change, that must be added to the privately sold vehicle expenses.

By the time dealaer adds in ACV f the trade in and to that amount adds in a discount off retail seeling price of new vehcile, the amount showed for total trade in is going to be pretty darn close to amount one can get froma private sale.

if one does private seller, the will get close to amount of dealer trade in, maybe slightly more, but then the trade allowance is loss and taxes must be paid on the full purchase price of new vehicle.

Bottom Line blanket statements are 1r1arely true. there always eceptions and it is a case by case, vehicle by vehicle, and area by area decision.

FYI, I grew up in the car business. Have been a used car salesman, Used car sales manager, New Car sales manager and even a General Sales Manager. Dad still owns a car lot. so too, uncles brother, ... you get the idea. I almost always trade in my car. I know I am going to get top dollar actual cash value, for my trade (No worries about them even bothering to try and steal it, they know I know better). and quite frankly, the extra pittance I would get, selling it myself, is simply not worth my time.

Big thing is; Don't lose dollars, chasing pennies
I don’t care if you grew up in the car business. Your Dad is in the business of making money by upcharging for unnecessary things. There’s always a risk and worry in buying any vehicle especially from a dealer. You should know this being in the family business. The dealerships are only looking out for their own interests, not the customer. Their “free warranties” on used vehicles is usually a month or less and dealers usually tack on a cost to the vehicle to cover the “free warranty”, unless you buy certified which is usually 3 months or until you hit a certain low number of miles. Again, the dealership uses these warranties to make money for themselves, not to protect the customer. So then, as a dealer, you would offer a customer an extended outside the company warranty which would cost considerably more since the dealerships don’t usually have their own,or talk you into the lifetime warranty which is really only good until the repair is greater than the cost of the vehicle. So either way, the dealer gets your money above and beyond the cost of the vehicle purchased. Isn’t that what dealers do? Try to take as much money as possible from the person buying? At least that’s been my experience at every dealership I’ve been to. I’ve bought a lot of vehicles. It’s always been better buying from people.

The dealership won’t make a deal with you unless they make money on you. As long as you feel that you got what you wanted fairly, in the end, that’s all that matters.

I trade in and usually try to time things right for the most trade in money. I had the newest Kia Sorento and they were still selling fast but pictures started popping up of a refreshed 2019 model. Once a refresh hits, yours loses money, traded it while the trading was good. That also happened to be when a boat load of RAM 1500's were coming off lease and the certified preowned stock was flooded. Got a good trade in and a good deal on my RAM with 23,000 miles and full warranty. I got really lucky this last time because Kia had just released a commercial for the refreshed Sorento. I kept an eye on it... they dropped the price and were selling it for 4k less than they gave me trade in.

I also like to trade in August when sales are slow because people are on vacation and spending money at home. I've also found buying at the end of the month to be true. They do have sales goals and each time we get riiiiiiiiight at the edge of a deal... I take a day to "think about it" and they always call back and one up it. July 29th or August 29th gives them 3 days to get it done and pushes the pace on their end. Once we iron out trade in price and new vehicle sale price I then say GREAT... and then they pull credit (but in reality they already pulled it so then they'll try to stiff you on finance rates) and try to make up the loss on extra points on the interest rate so I give it a "HELL! I thought a 700+ score was enough for the good rates. I just need to forget about buying now and work on my credit score and paying down debt below %30". Then suddenly they drop points and lower your interest rate to 0% or 1.9% etc to match the new vehicle promos. I think that's one of the biggest scams about credit = they have "credit models" built on what THEY want. You can have an 800 but they pull a score with a credit model that says your 650 and try to get you on points. Flip side is... you can also have a 620 and to make the sale they pull a model that shows your 700 to get the deal made.

And yes... I am THAT customer! I want but I don't NEED it. I will let them know that up front.

OH!!! And get a couple free oil changes and tire rotations throw in because "I just want to make sure ya'll change it and check it to make sure the previous owner did change oil like they were supposed to and there's not issues with the alignment that could be from suspension damage".

OP, if you want to trade, trade.
if you want sell it yourself, do so.

Just be aware, car dealers "deal" in cars, all day, every day of the year, year after year.

Simple FYI, the guy who got ripped off, the most, almost never knows it, else he would not get ripped off.

Regarding price. think about this.
the two of us buy the exact car.
we both keep the exact same amount of year and miles.
Neither ever breaks down and both gives us faithful service.
I paid $10K less than you did.

We get rid of them, for the same price.
I can't wait to see that piece of crap get out of my life. I've hated it, since day one.
You are heart broken it is leaving your life and you will never see it again.

Both cars, same cars , same experience with the cars, I paid $10K less. . .
who got the deal?

Good Luck.

I traded in two cars! The family was growing, my truck was still working but the quad cab wasn’t cutting it, and it was 14 years old. Our other car caliber, my wife’s old car, had been good before we had kids. It had no power door locks/windows(really inconvenient) plus it was hard to fit one car seat into it, no way we were going to fit two. Plus it had 90k on it, and it seemed like we started having problems, alternator around 75k then 85 k the throttle body. It never felt the same after that. I looked into a new Ram and I was sold. So I traded in the front of ram and the wife’s old car. With the car I wanted to get out of it before something else major went wrong. Didn’t think I could sell it easily. So I went for just trading it in. With the old truck, I noticed in the last 6 months of owning it the value was dropping. I wanted to get what I could out of it while I could. Looking back on it I could of sold it myself probably pretty easy. But I went for the easy factor and traded them in. I think I got 7k for the Ram and 2k for the caliber. Can’t remember. For me it was haggling with them for the payment I wanted. (They were both long paid for)First time I traded anything in. When we bought my wife’s new car(the journey) back in 2014, we had no intention of trading anything in. Partly because I didn’t think they’d give us much for the caliber and we weren’t ready to let it go. So just know what your trade in is worth. Be aggressive. You have more room for negotiations if they low ball you on the trade in, plus they need to move the 18’s. fdbe07702133a8d049151b538f3d0328.jpg96914c14bdc939dd7b34cd4b4b29ea8f.jpg

I've done this on a few occasions also. I hate private selling stuff. I'e done it many times which is why I typically just trade in and avoid the aggravation. I've also auctioned some on eBay. I've done ok doing that also. Saves some of the aggravation. The winner gets it. You dont have to deal with a bunch of time wasters/bunch of people you don' know coming to your house. To each their own though.

Well I have decided to trade it in. I’ve had it for nine years and it owes me nothing. I also do not need or want people coming to my home and dealing with maybe’s or whatever. Again since I am not in a rush nor do I need the sale of this car to be able to financially afford the next vehicle, that gives me time.

I’ll drive both cars until I find the deal that works for me, and if it’s not with a Ram I’ll be ok. I would love one but I’m old enough to not let my wants get be bent over. Also several folks have suggested getting a 2017/2018 2500 since they want to get rid of “ old stock “.

and bad timing, new 2018 Rams on the lot for $15k off sticker. They don't care about mods, so my thousands worth of parts only matters to the next buyer.

Yes, it's good to know what your vehicle is worth when you trade but the only number that is important is the trade difference. If they want to low ball mine then I low ball theirs. I've done the homework and know what I want and what I will pay in trade difference before I ever go to the lot. I don't play along with the "I have to ask my manager" game either. If the salesperson can't make the deal why am I talking to them?

I traded for a 17 Big Horn last year. I followed the little sales guy in to the managers office. I gave the manager a post it with a number on it. I told him I would trade for that amount right now, then I said I will be out front making a phone call, let me know within 10 minutes. If you can't then thank you for your time and I'm headed to another dealer to see if they want to do business. It took about 3 minutes for him to come out and agree to the deal.

Good luck finding a new 17 anywhere. I’d look for an 18. Supposedly the 19HD’s are coming in Sept-Nov. I know there will be no rebates or discounts on a 19 HD.
So back to the 18... I hope you do buy a Ram and so does the rest of the crew here.
I’m not sure of where ya live but, I know the owner of the CDJR dealer here in Sherman Texas and can help you get an awesome deal.
