i have a 99 Ram 1500 4X4 5.9 with drum brakes on the rear. My brakes were not working well, real mushy, so i bled the brakes, went fine for the front rotors, but when bleeding the back brakes, I barley got a drop or two of fluid to come out of the wheel cylinders. I replaced the mater cylinder, bled it and the brakes, they are firm now, but still not fluid to the rear brakes. Also replaced the rear brake hose as i thought maybe it collapsed inside, but i am not getting fluid that far back, the metal line that supplies brake fluid to the rear hose it dry. Any ideas where the stoppage could be? Can I disconnect the line at the master cylinder and at the rear brake hose and blow air through there without messing anything up?
I assume truck is equipped with ABS, is this something i can test there?

Also, one new wheel cylinder and brand new brakes on the rear

disconnect the line at the ABS module and see if you get fluid there, if you do it can be in the line somewhere. I think the 1999 didnt have individual rear lines just 1 that has a t over the rear axle. If you are getting fluid at the abs module, then go to the t fitting and so on.

Op, To get the valve off the axel, take the clamp off of the rubber breather line, unscrew the two brake lines, the valve is threaded into the axel housing so take an adjustable wrench and lefty loosy righty tighty. I’d spray it good with some penetrating erl first and let it soak a bit. It probably isn’t going to be tough to loosen the valve cause there’s always a lot of greas n crap back there that’ll keep it from rusting solid on there.

as others said, check in the front master first, if fluid comes out there, check above the axle, where the rubber line goes, disconnect it and keep pushing those brakes til it comes out, if good there, then check the splitter valve on the axle, you can disconnect the brake lines from both ends, if that is good, then disconnect from the wheel cylinders one side first then the other, if good there, then check the bleeder valve on the wheel cylinder one side at a time, then remove and replace the affected wheel cylinder.

Also when bleeding brakes, and i may be wrong, but i was taught bleed further from cylinder first. (so pass rear wheel, then driver rear wheel, then pass wheel, then driver wheel.)

Thank you for the replies...

I will check at the ABS module, and move down the line....I was just under the hood checking out where it was....
I did replace the T fitting on the rear axle as it is part of the rubber hose assembly that I replaced already...unless there is another one, but i should find that as i trace the lines after the ABS module.

Is the ABS only on the rear brakes on this truck or both?

Thanks again, will let you know what I find...

Ok, so there is no fluid coming into or out of the ABS module, then went to what I guess is the proportioning valve (with the green thing on it) and there is fluid going in, but not out of it. I guess it is bad and i need a new one? See pics of my rig and the brake stuffIMG_7049.JPG IMG_7046.JPG

I believe that is the proportioning valve. I would try to find one at a junk yard.

Just to confirm you have fluid coming into that? But not coming out to the lines? try disconnecting the line that is not receiving fluid and pumping the crap out of the breaks, you are trying to essentially dislodge the rust / sludge build up.

Abs could be rear only but some have abs sensors on front too, look at the back of your hubs, if there is another line / wires coming off it besides the brake line from the caliber then you have front abs as well.

I can confirm that there is fluid in the lines going into the proportioning valve, but no fluid coming out of the proportioning valve. Pick-n-pull is having a 1/2 off sale this weekend, so i will likely just get another one from there.

I will take a look at the front for ABS, but i just put in new ball joints and do not remember seeing any wires for ABS.

Will post up after i get the proportioning valve replaced....

Thank you

Well, I replaced the proportioning valve, and that fixed the problem. Rear brakes working great.
