I'm going to see a 2003 Ram with a Hemi with flexifuel system. It has about 160k miles on it. Quad cab, short bed and 4x4. What should i look out of it? Any special things and places to check?

Maybe it's me, but I don't recall the Hemi being Flex Fuel capable.

They aren't, but it's a popular modification in Europe to convert them to run on propane. I'm guessing that's what it is.

The guy who is selling the Ram says it has a flexfuel system so you can drive it with fuel that has a lot of ethanol in it. So you guys are saying that a Hemi can"t do that?

Edit:

The flex fuel didn’t come to dodge trucks till 06 and it said only on the 4.7 but recently informed that is bs. I can’t find the frigin truth anywhere, every answer I get goes in different directions. The info from Chrysler is wrong or maybe I was reading something else. Sorry for the bad info guys n gals.

It's possible that it's been converted, but it's no simple task. Basically everything in the fuel system would need to be changed to be compatible with E85.

Check the wiring for corrosion, open the tipm(fuse box) make sure there’s no wires being used as jumpers< that’s definitely no good, check frame and components for rust/rot, smell the tranny fluid, if it smells burnt then walk, inspect the suspension, especially the leaf springs, they should be curved not strait. there’s plenty more to go over but not enough time. Good luck with purchase, hope everything works out.

The flex fuel didn’t come to dodge trucks till 09 and only on the 4.7. Info strait from Chrysler.

Was that a typo? 03 does sound early, I don't know about the Europe thing, but my 07 was a flex fuel.

I’ve never seen a Hemi that was factory flex fuel. I’m pretty sure the 4.7’s were. Make sure you double check what engine is actually in there. Other then what’s been mentioned before, try to make sure you can get a cold start to listen for exhaust manifold leaks and cracks, those are a pain to fix. And listen for any weird valve train noise that would indicate any lifter issues. When you test drive it watch the temp to make sure it doesn’t overheat. I bought mine with a blown head gasket from previous owners neglect

5.7's were never flex fuel from the factory, 4.7's came in two flavors, flex fuel and non flex fuel (certain years). There are major differences between the two, starting at the tank all the way forward with the fuel system, some engine components (mainly fuel delivery) and PCM programming.

What should I look from the engine that could indicate that the engine has a flexfuel system or not?

Whether it's a 4.7 or 5.7 lol. If it's a 5.7 and the seller is claiming flex fuel, then either he/she did it or had a shop do it. Either way, it isn't original and to me sounds like issues just waiting to happen. Is there an ad we can see with pics, etc?

Sorry, not sure why my "link" function isn't working this morning.

Well, I was ready to call BS on this one, but some quick research shows this: https://forum.hptuners.com/showthread.php?61950-E85-Flexfuel-on-2016-17-Dodge-RAM-1500-HEMI-V8-5-7L

Seems a dealer in France has been modding the trucks themselves for Flex Fuel. So, seems it can and is being done over in Europe.

Then there's this: http://e85vehicles.com/e85/index.php?/topic/1529-first-epa-approved-flex-kit-covering-the-57-hemi/

So looks like it can be done here as well.

Interesting. Well if it has been installed properly then there ya go. I'd ask who installed it since it isn't factory. Makes me wonder if those kits are only good for stock vehicles or if you could run with on a modified vehicle...

So I just went and got it! Drives so much smoother than my previous 2500 Cummins. It's a bit too loud, it has a 1 sidepipe coming in front of the rear tire and it's a straight pipe with a cat. I'm gonna pull it out from the back and maybe with a flowthrough muffler. Do you think I should get rid of the cat? It now has a bit ****** mileage, around 7-8 mpg in the city. I think I need to replace the air filter, plugs and wires for starters. And I'm not gonna drive it with E85, maybe with 98 or Shell 99.
