Dealer fill (PYB 5W-20) and filter out, PUP 5W-30 and bigger RP filter in.

Made a mess removing the filter (at least it wasnt gorilla tight), had it in the zip lock bag but then couldnt get the zip lock bag out without dumping some (most?) of the contents.

Easy enough to clean up, but what I didnt like was that I couldnt find a way to get the bigger filter in place with it filled with oil. I lubed the gasket like I always do, but really prefer having at least some oil in the filter on first startup. Remote mount could fix it, but not sure how that would affect my MaxCare.

I think the thought of prefilling the filter is one of those tips that your grandpa passed down to your dad whom taught it to you, but not really all that necessary. Many vehicles and tractors use canister filters that are mounted vertically on the top side of the engine. They drain out completely every time the engine is stopped with no concern of charging the filter before startup. If modern oils can't protect internal parts for a few seconds without being splashed again by new oil, then we've got bigger concerns to worry about.

My 5.9 Cummins required the oil filter to have the filter filled with oil. Other than that, I have always put a dry filter on my vehicles. Many of them have gone over the ,200000 mile marker. That was before this was common.

I see no downside to filling the oil filter before putting it on the vehicle. Even if the filter is mounted sideways (hemi) if you leave the oil sit in it for a good 15 minutes the media soaks up most of it and it’s not a problem.

I will always do it with everything. Cant hurt. Can only help

I never thought about letting the filter soak up the oil. I will try that next time (I usually fill the filter right before reinstalling it).

So day 1 of PUP 5-30 and Im not overly impressed.

On startup I got a bit of noise presumably because of lifter drain down (similar to my old truck but much quieter and only for a second or two), but I could swear it wasnt there even with PYB 5-20.

At idle the engine seems quieter, but for some reason I could swear it sounds more ticky when driving. Maybe its just me, maybe it will take a few miles to go away, but thats what Im hearing now.

Would be disappointing if PUP doesnt work out as well as PYB.

I found PYB 5w20 to run quieter than any synthetic I've run besides Redline and the PUP mix I ran...

Wonder if use guys that have the aluminum construction deep pans on our transmission could utilize the location on them that is ment for drilling and tapping a hole for a temp sensor for this magnet...

Just drill/tap minimum depth for a #6 flat head screw and stick this puppy on the outside of the pan.

I think it wpuld work well if someone wants a magnet on the pan besides the one built into to drain plug..... the magnet would have to be pretty strong though as the aluminum is pretty thick on these pans.

What are you running these days?

I went from 5-20 to 5-30....could the heavier weight CAUSE ticks instead of CURE them? I didnt think that would be the case.

Interesting, I have not found that at all. I went from factory fill to a PUP mix of 4-5W20 and 3-0W40 and the then to straight PUP 5W30. I am getting close to 3000 miles on it and it starts, runs and idles nice and quiet so far. Around 9400 miles on the truck.

Yeah it wasnt what I was expecting...I know a few people havent had luck with PUP though.

I will give it some time....oil level is perfect, no leaks, etc. Id love to use PYB year round (cheap, a lot easier to get than PUP, etc) but short tripping and cold weather make it not a great choice.

I could try Pennzoil Gold at some point, some people have had good luck with it and it should hold up better to my short trip/cold weather conditions.

I thought about trying the Pennzoil Gold but I can't find it at all around here but I can get PUP, figure that one out.

If you can’t find it and you’re really want to use Pennzoil gold bottle buy Mopar brand semi synthetic ...that’s exactly what it is

Good to know but that will only be found at the dealer and it will probably be expensive but I will ask next time I am in there. I can get PUP on sale for a pretty decent price.

That’s why I said “ really want it”
You will pay for it.

We have heard almost nothing ( here) about anybody using Mopar branded semi synthetic so if it was of interest to anyone to try it we would love to hear about it.
