When it comes to getting a rock through a tire I always figured it was going to be out on some rough Colorado mountain dirt road near my home, not on the fine pavement of downtown Butte, Montana. Last Monday after travelling while towing all day on only pavement from Sheridan, Wyoming, a flat tire wasn't expected. Just a piece of small road gravel which got caught between the tread. Lost some 2 PSI about every 20 seconds per the warning and made it in time to the tire shop with my 5/32" tread depth original Duratrac tires. It was kindly fixed for free at Les Schwab. Next set of larger tires will definitely include the same size spare.

If your next set of tires includes more Duratracs you can look forward to more of the same. Not a durable enough tire for a truck this heavy. Leave them to the Jeepers.

Either the Falken Wildpeaks or BFG KOs in the 285 75R17 size with the 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake.

I have the 285/70-17 Bfg KO's on the '16 PW on Black AEV Wheels, and as advertised, they hooked up in the snow and ice just amazing.

I was even surprised that fully aired up, they just got me off the post-weekend chewed up and triple digit baked dry deep sand without issue - 4 Hi, Unlocked.

It seemed to do much better at avoiding that damned wheel hop than the leaf sprung '13 did with the first Gen Bfg A/T's that came on it. VERY pleased with them...

Might go with 35 12.50R17 Duratrac load range E before next winter. Issue of a little rock busting through mine were more than likely due to a lighter rated stock D rated tire on my heavy Power Wagon. Never had an issue with a 10 ply rated tire breaking easily ever since my first desert flat tire back in 1971. The tires on my Dad's 1962 International Scout all wheel drive were actually 10 plies. I ran over a much bigger rock with it when I was driving at age 13.

I like my mickey Thompson mtz’s, but I’ve noticed a bit of cupping at the sipes already at 7k miles. I need to rotate them ASAP. Other than that I am extremely pleased with them, both in noise and performance off road on the trails and the sand.

"Back in 1971, the tires on my Dad's 1962 International Scout all wheel drive were 10 Plys."

Yeah, back then, all I could find were Bias Ply tires though, not Radials. ...but in '71, all I was wheelin was my Huffy. :D

No, that is the funny thing about tires... like life , I suppose. You can rarely (if ever) get the best of both worlds. Sticky Compound vs. Decent Treadwear, Thick, Puncture Resistant Sidewalls vs. being thin enough to nicely 'Mushroom' when aired down.

I had the exact same debate when replacing the stock rubber on the '13 PW. Ended up going with a wide lighter load rated "D" Range to air down and float and absorb the damned washboard roads out here, but then worried about cutting down a sidewall and being strong enough to tow at full PSI. One reason I was happy to get the E Range KO's on the '16.

Hell, even just cut down a sidewall on a 10 Ply 'Military Grade' Goodyear and had to limp it home on the runflat as I don't have a spare in that rig. Granted, it is just over 10 years old, and weather cracked, despite only having a few hundred miles on it.

I swear, letting stuff sit does more damage than wearing it out with use.

If you’ll do a 35x12.50r17, take a look at Toyo C/Ts. Mine do very well in Alaska where I drive on snow and ice half the year. They’re also pretty good on mud. See my posts in the new off-road pics thread. E rated, very durable carcass.

When I had my old duratracs on (~32k miles on them) we were out camping and a bunch of us piled in the truck to go spot elk in the evening. On the way back to camp my tire warning light popped on and I watched one of my tires deflating. It was getting dark and cold and I had a friend with a new baby in the truck starting to fuss, and cold beer back at camp waiting. I made it back to camp at a swift pace just before it went fully flat. It was the same type of puncture, a piece of gravel broke through.

When I got back home from that trip, I went to my local Discount Tire and put some Toyo AT2s on.

Wow! Thank you, Low Sky. The Toyo C-T's also have the 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake which is good to get through Oregon highway winter restrictions along with carrying chains.

I wouldn’t steer somebody looking at 3-peak tires wrong.

Weighs in at 77 pounds in the 35". Must be its heavier construction to resist those quarter size gravel punctures. The Duratrac weighs 11 pounds less.

Toyo MT, RT, CT.... all heavy, durable tires. Really can’t have it both ways.

Mine take me where Duratracs fear to go.

Crazy Story; The most 'undignified' Power Wagon tire death that I ever heard of, was when the only other guy in town with a PW was out hunting, and let his 'soon to be ex-father in law' borrow his truck... after a few cold brews, the fool jumped in with his .308 Winchester and somehow while going down the road with the rifle laying across the center console, pointing at the passenger floor board, had a 'accidental / negligent discharge' and fired a round through the floor of the truck.

It went through the floor, fender liner, somehow missed in the drivetrain and suspension and blew through the tire, exiting out the face of the wheel!!!

... I bet his ears are still ringing!

Needless to say I don't think he ever loaned his truck out again.

Luckily, nothing else, and No One was injured, other than having to come back and humbly explain to everyone what the Idiot did.

I did some internet research on the Toyo C/T tires and it appears that they aren't too available on the Western Slope of Colorado. No listings found. They are sold in Canada and Alaska though. Got to deal with what is available near where I live, otherwise, it can become quite pricey and hard to obtain a replacement if needed on a short notice. Love to give them a try on my Power Wagon, but other than shopping in Grand Junction, Colorado (aka Junktown/**** capital) for tires which is 45 minutes from my home, there's nothing bigger than that little city. It's over 240 miles in just the east or west directions from there to any bigger town.

I'm in a similar situation here where I live... very limited 'local' sources.

I've been ordering tires, receiving them by mail, throwing them in the bed, then just taking them to the local shop for Mounting / Balancing.

Most have great prices, free shipping right to your door, are super-fast and the whole thing works out so well, even with the additional cost of the mounting, it still beats local prices on what little selection people do have in stock.

Last set cost me like an extra $10 to get Four in Three Days!

Checking for you, in the size you were discussing, I couldn't find the Toyo C/T's, but they do have the M/T's, A/T's and R/T's at Fourwheel parts. You might call them, or try Discount Tire Direct or the Tire Rack if you need something very specific that is not listed.

Here is the link;

Brakelate, Thank you, I have in the past purchased from all three tire companies and have had tires and wheels delivered. The C/T is the only off road Toyo tire which meets the winter restrictions of both Canada and Oregon. Got to have that 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol to legally proceed down their restricted winter roads. There are a few other choices of 35" tires which meet the winter restrictions and are more readily available.

Gotcha! A lot of people don't know about, or are afraid to do the 'mail order' tire thing.

Some of us have no real options, other times in my life, I too had just done it for convenience.

Just thought I would throw it out there, just in case. ;)
