What's a good battery to get?

The interstate battery in my truck seems to be getting a little weak, and it's 7+ years old. I wanted an Optima but started reading that the quality is hit or miss since they moved to Mexico. Want something U.S. made ideally. Any suggestions? I want something nice, but hopefully under $200...

    Hard-starting when (really) cold

Do you have an engine block heater installed? They are recommended anytime a vehicle is being regularly used in sub freezing temperatures. I think you could get a simple one for ~$50.

whats everyone pulling for gas mileage with gasoline engines??

99 Ram 1500 5.9L 4X4, I live in the mountains but do a lot of highway driving(hilly and windy). I average about 12.5-13 typically.

    E-Fan Conversion

Interesting points, I wonder if the stock alternator would have issues with the fans at idle? On the FF Dynamics website they claim an 18 A draw for both fans at full RPM's. What I like about a dual E Fan setup is if one fails, you still have another fan so you aren't stranded. Sounds like it...

    E-Fan Conversion

I'm thinking of getting rid of the old clutch fan next and switching to an E-Fan. Has anybody else done this? Am I right to expect a ~10 HP gain? This is the kit that I am interested in: Ram 1994-2001 (Gas) | FF Dynamics

    Engine whistle help

I wouldn't advise mixing ATF with your engine oil. ATF has lots of detergents and probably wouldn't be good for the engine.

Consider getting an Eaton TruTrac carrier! They are well regarded in the off road world for replacing the clutch pack style LSD.

Oil pump went out, now what?

The major power gains are gonna come from upgrading the heads and cams. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can suggest which brands to go with for those parts.

    1998 RAM 1500 Help

I had a very similar situation like this a while back. My truck shifted perfectly fine, but anytime I was going slow or in park I noticed a metal on metal sound just like you described. What it actually was, was my catalytic converter had clogged up and the rattling sound was coming from the...

    Rear Diff questions

Thanks, that cleared it up for me. Think I'm gonna try out the fel pro diff cover gaskets, personally I haven't had good luck with making my own gaskets on other projects.

    Rear Diff questions

About to due a fluid change on my diffs and transfer cases. However, I've run into a little confusion on whether or not I need to add the limited slip additive. In the factory service manual, it says: REAR AXLE • The lubricant should have MIL-L-2105C and API GL 5 quality specifications...

    MOVE DIY Front Winch Bumper

Looks good. I think the locally made custom bumpers seem to turn out better than those just ordered online. I just got a MIG welder a few weeks ago, still learning how to use it. One of these days I'm hoping to make myself a matching rear bumper. I also wish I had gotten a receiver hitch on the...

Perfectly running stock engine, still a dog

The shop didn't replace my O2 sensors when they replaced the cat. It lost power on the original O2 sensors. However, I did recently replace both O2 sensors and noticed no improvement. Is there any way to test that my PCM is working correctly?

Perfectly running stock engine, still a dog

You're right about them being heavy tires. On top of that I got a set of rims that are also a bit heavy. On the other hand, when I got that new cat installed, it was with the heavy tires/rims installed. Any ideas why it would run so strong for a week and then fade off? I was hyped thinking I...

    MOVE DIY Front Winch Bumper

I would definitely look at getting the whole thing made out of 1/4" plate for the next bumper. Mine is all 1/4" and I have no worries about bending at least. But, one problem I was having with it at first was the mounts kept sliding out of alignment when I would pull people out. Turned out the...

Perfectly running stock engine, still a dog

After my recent tune up + plenum repair, I have my 5.9 Magnum in 100% stock condition with zero issues. Now the thing is, it just seems underpowered. My daily commute involves driving 8 miles up a 5-6% grade. My truck is generally unloaded with no cargo either. If I attempt to drive up this...

    Plenum replacement price?

I was quoted a while back for $700 labor to do just the plenum repair by the Dodge Dealership. I decided to do it myself, and for $500 and a weekend I repaired the plenum with Fel-Pro gasket AND the aluminum plate, valve cover gaskets, timing chain, chain tensioner, water pump, replaced both...

Plastic Restoration + Steering Wheel Reconditioning

The black trim around my dash is full of tiny scratches. Are there any good products out there to remove the scratches from the plastic and make it look like new? Also, my steering wheel is sticky and has sun damage. Any tips to make it smooth so it slides easily through my hands while driving?

    Buying 1999 Dodge Ram Sport 55k miles $7,995 ?

I think it looks clean, might be a pretty good deal. Believe it or not, driving a big truck does not make you more safe. In fact, a lot of these trucks had relatively poor crash test rating, and Smart Cars and Priuses are far safer in an accident.

    Buying 1999 Dodge Ram Sport 55k miles $7,995 ?

I believe 7900 is a bit steep. See if you can get a lower price. For reference, I bought a 1999 Ram 1500 Sport with the Quad cab 4x4, 62K miles for $6500. Considering this is a single cab too...I would pay 6800 max if I were you.

When I first bought my 2nd gen, one of my friends that owns one suggested that I should leave the overhead display on Compass/Temp and not to bother tracking my MPG. Boy was he right... Best advice I have gotten with these trucks.
