    He was following those instructions. After removing the clips, should the shaft in fig 29 just slide out of the housing? If so, something is still holding it in there and he cannot figure it out

    In the service manual it is referred to as an axle vacuum shift motor. There is a shaft, behind the shift motor, that goes into a housing that the fork is inside of. He cannot get that shaft out to remove the broken fork.

    Yes, it was in 4hi when he hot the roof. Hre took it out of 4hi ( so he thought) and headed to town). When he got app. 3 miles down the road is when it jerked and made the loud clunking sound. He figures that is when it popped out of 4hi. After that, it did not work any longer.
