I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 extended cab 4WD with the towing package, the sport package, and the 5.9L Magnum engine. The pinion gear in the rear diff welded to the housing. I want to replace the entire rear diff, but they are all over $1200 used. I can find 2006 - 8 rear ends with 4.10 gearing for $400. Is the only difference the mounting point for the leaf springs? If that is the case then I can always relocate them. I have the tools to do the cutting and welding. Do the drive shafts mount up the same?

They use the same u-joint, so even if one was a strap style and the other a flange mount it shouldn't be much of an issue.
