Light came on today checked it as soon as it came on. Code p1790. Shifts runs drives just like before. I have only had this truck for a few weeks. It has 115k. I believe I'm still getting lock up. When I'm on the highway 75-80mph here I'm at about 2200-2700rpm but when I attempt to accept up hill she will downshift and hit 3500 rpm. But I am running 285 75 16s Kenda clever m/ts
Now being no stranger to the 46re I assume it's going be a transmission and torque converter. But figured 115k can't be. Figured change the sensors solenoids etc first. I happen to have two 46res in my front yard the 96 another dodge ram the 98 from a jeep. Are the solenoids and sensors the same? Or am I going to have to buy new ones? Other than that are the torque converters the same? And are they interchangeable between the years. Not the 98 I know that wouldn't work. Thanks for any tips or help sorry for any typos I'm on a phone.

There are other threads on here that talk about the year difference in TqConverters and the flex plates with the engines. I don't remember the years myself, but i'm pretty sure that between your two trucks, one uses a balanced flexplate and the other is internally balanced and uses a non-balanced flexplate. But I really don't know without going and finding the other threads.
The sensors and solenoids should be the same, I don't think they changed the internals much, but 2001 is the ******* year. (2000 is the silent generation, lol)

As for the code, if thats the only one, i'm not sure how much guessing can be done. I'd just drive it until it gives another symptom. Could do a fluid and filter change, take a peek while the pan is off.

So I took apart that oher trans and took out the sensors solonoids etc.. took the pan off. Pan is clean. Fluids very good. But the plugs are different on the solonoids and the connection up top looks to be a rectangle not a circle.
even advance autoparts lists these as the same part.

Scratch that the connector is the same on the top just not the solenoid. it has a square one. When i took the throttle body off the 96 the park rod came right out. no such luck with the 2001 damn thing wont come out. got stuck dangeling the tb until the spring and retainer fell out. then it was too dark to see so i guess i will work on it in the morning.

When I dropped the valve body on mine I had the same deal on the parking rod. Thing wouldn't budge at all, it wasn't because the vehicle was resting on it either as I had chocked all four wheels and left it in neutral. Must be an 01 thing. I don't know what year your second picture is, but I don't remember my 01 looking like that, must be different parts afterall. Stupid transition year.

As for the parking rod, I just detached it right above the TB, it worked alright.
If you don't mind, would you take a picture or two of the front band application lever and the two tabs on the band itself. The tabs on my band are rubbing on the front bit of case right there.

Thanks, for the picture. I guess the band just rides close to the housing.
You could try Rockauto for parts, sometimes they have weird things like that.

96+ use the same tq converter for the rams and pretty sure the Dakotas with a different flexplate based on engine size. I make no guarantees about jeeps or durangos.

96-99 use the same tcc/od solenoid group and governor sensor and solenoid. 2000+ use a different style. Neutral safety changed in 98. All are swappable to convert the trans to whatever year you need

Yea the only difference is that black square connection. opposed to the 96 having a circle connection in the pan.
Got it all back together took it for a ride to test it out and.... ready for it....Hit a deer.
Hit the deer and the hood unlatched folded right up over the windshield broke the windshield.... The truck is in a sad state.... Waiting for the insurance company to get back to me..
Think im going to need a hood a grill a battery and a windshield.
