Looking at a 2012 Ram 3500 Laramie Limited 4X4 to use to pull a goose neck horse trailer. Trailer weight is 7,000 lbs plus 2 horses for 2,400 lbs. Gear and tack 400 lbs. Its a living quarter trailer so not sure what to add for water....make the total approx 10,000 lbs. Assuming a hitch weight of 20% that means our payload is 2,000 lbs hitch weight, 600 lbs for 4 people plus gear and misc....apprrox 2,800 lbs.

I was really disappointed to find the GVWR is only 10,100 lbs for this model leaving a payload of 2,560 lbs for a 1 ton truck! This unit can't legally pull a 10,000 lb trailer.

Please tell me I'm looking at this wrong.

Here is a link to the stats.

Okay I am a complete nublet when it comes to figuring this stuff out.

Just a few questions... Is this 3500 a SRW or DRW?

I assume a longbed 4x4.

What rear axle ratio? 4.10? 3.73?

Go here: Ram Trucks - Towing Capacity Chart

Then hit "Look up my vehicle" you will need your VIN.

When I did that it pulled up my trucks payload and max trailer. Maybe that'll give you a definite answer. If I am reading it right it also gave me the GCVW.

The truck is a short bed 4X4 SRW with 3.73 gears.

I went to the link you provided and it shows a max payload of 2,693 lbs. well below what I thought it would be for a 1 ton. Max towing shows 13,450 and the GCWR is 21,000 lbs.

Big jump up in payload from 2012 to 2013 models..... A 2013 model shows payload capacity at 3,950 compared to the 2012 model at 2,693

Get air bags, and I doubt anyone would even look sideways at you. Also, is 20% high? I tow goosenecks exclusively, but have never bothered to weigh axles when hooked up.

Oh, they can legally tow a 10,000lb trailer, but with only a driver, and no gear. That's YOUR problem, not Dodge's.
They're fiends, aren't they?:flipthebird:
