I'm looking for a 2500 with the 6.4 hemi. Would like to find one with 4.10 axle. We have a 2016 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi with a 3.21 axle and it's just not doing a good job with our 7000# travel trailer.

I'm kinda new at this stuff so any advice/comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated..........

thanks.....

Welcome to RamForum.

The 6.4L truck with 4.10's will handle your trailer just fine.

There were some 2014 units that were recalled for faulty piston wrist pins but other than that, they are pretty well made trucks.

Mine had a self leveling rear air bag system that worked fantastic. Loved the automatic load leveling it provided.

So what kinds of questions are you needing answers to? How can we help?

The Powerwagon isn't really designed for towing a trailer.

OP, Stick to your guns and get a truck with the 4.10's. A friend bought one with 3.73's because he couldn't find a 4.10 truck on the lot and was too impatient to order one (He's a member here, he knows who he is...). He wasn't happy with the performance, mainly the 2-3-4 transmission spacing while towing up elevations. The 4.10 gears would likely have solved all of his problems. The 6.4 is a very nice engine. Its relatively new, so long term reliability hasn't been determined yet, but it appears well designed. I think you'll like it.

I just bought a 6.4 hemi truck this week. I towed about 9 hours round trip with JR on friday and I’ll hsve to say I was very happy with it. It even done fairly well on gas by my terms.

True, however pulling 7000# would be no issue for a PW. It’s certainly not the most economical choice but it’s one cool truck.

If you're looking at new, you'll be hard pressed to find one sitting on a dealers lot. Most 4.10's are specially ordered per the customer. I have a 2017 Mega cab with the 3.73 gear ratio and pull a 7,600 lb trailer. Had trips up and down the east coast, over the Smokey mountains and it has pulled effortlessly. It will rev above 3,000 RPM in 3rd gear on big inclines...but I've never lost speed. In fact, I can still accelerate up most grades at 60 mph. I know someone with the same gearing who pulls a 10,000 lb trailer across the Rockies in Colorado and is very comfortable doing so. No issues for him accept for a bit of slowing at the top...(not nearly as slow as the Semi's he's passing). Any trailer 10,000 lbs or less should be a fine for a truck with the 3.73.

Maybe. Depends if the 7000 lbs is dry weight or loaded weight. If its dry weight, it probably weighs closer to 8500 loaded for a trip. That's over 1000 lbs tongue weight, plus passengers. The Powerwagons have about 1500 lbs of payload. Depending upon how many passengers, firewood, or other items the OP wants to carry in the bed, you can quickly overload the Powerwagon.

Its a cool looking truck with unique abilities, but it wasn't designed for towing a trailer. I wouldn't spend MORE money to get a LESS CAPABLE truck to put my family in and haul a camper.

But hey, that's just me.

If you decide to buy a 2500 gasser yes get the 6.4 and order it with the 4.10s. You never hear of people saying I wished I had gotten the 3.73s instead.
Also don't think you need to maintain full flat land cruising speed or be able to accelerate on a grade while dragging a TT. This is only abuse of your equipment and a waste of your gas dollars.
On another note read through a couple of the recent threads here. With the 8 speed even towing with the 3.21 should be reasonable even at 7k. The vast majority who have trouble towing a TT with 1/2 ton is only because they wouldn't make one trip to the scales to set & adjust their hitch and load via scale results.

Don’t be scared of the 373s with that light of a load..I regularly pull one of of our 10k mini excavators with 4 different buckets on a 16k trailer with my 3500/6.4/373s on 35s and it does great. 410s would be fine but I still accelerate fine and pull NH hills fine

The difference between 3:73”s and 4:10”s is minimal period. They should offer a 440 or 456 gear like they do on their cab and chassis trucks, the truck does fine with either gear set, but would really shine with a 4:56 or 4:88. There are members on here that have upgraded the gears for about 3-5k depending if dealer does it or a regular shop. You probably wouldn’t notice the difference between 4:10”s and 373”s... so I wouldn’t stess that much over it. If you feel like you need more pick me up out of the truck then try to get the dealer to throw in a gear change or start pricing out a gear swap and go beat up a dealer on pricing for a truck with 373”s. But by all means if there are two trucks side by side, same price and one has 4:10”s - grab it. Keep us posted.

This is good advice. If you can find a 4.10 geared truck go for it! If not, with the weights your towing 3.73s will be fine. My truck tugs my 6k TT great, I have to back out of it some on the grades because I can accelerate up them and I have the 73s. Another 1-2k loaded weight would be no problem for my truck. These 6.4 trucks flat out run!

Agree once your over 10k loaded trailer weight I'd say you need the 4.10s or steeper 4.40 mopar gearset. Good luck

My 2500 Hemi has the 3.73s and I haul an 11K 5th wheel out west in the hills and it gets the job done. I agree to grab the 4.10 if possible but if the perfect truck comes along with 3.73 don't worry too much.

I researched a lot and was really thinking of going with the 4.56. That seems like it would be about perfect with stock tire size. Unfortunately, I'm working more than towing so I've just stuck with my 3.73.

As far as the dealer, mine told me all they could do is 4.10s and it would be 3K+. I found a local shop that would do aftermarket with both axles parts/labor for about $1800.

I have a 14’ 1500 5.7 8sp 3.21 gears and I’m pulling 7k. Just got back from the scales and dialed in the equalizer hitch. I want a 2500 down the road, but this truck performs just fine for our rig. 735cb98d615daae3033199374dae8a91.jpg

If your truck will be hauling most of its life, then the 4:10 will serve you better. But if its a couple times a month, you will regret the 4:10 when your always filling up. I had a 2014 1500 with 8 speed and 3:21 and pulled my 7200 trailer good but was borderline on max weight so upgraded to a 2017 crew cab 2500 with a 6.4L. Has 3:73 gears and doesn't break a sweat pulling my trailer. Still only get around 13 mpg unloaded. Around 10 mpg pulling. I only pull a couple times a month so am fine with my truck. My truck can pull up to 13000 lbs.
