Yep, 7 mile and chanel #5 bridges are a hoot in that South Florida east wind. Go 3.92. You'll be glad you did when you hit the turnpike and throttle it.

We're up by MM 88, I'll have to order my truck, there is no stock and were leaving in 21 days so I'll run my D-max down and back but I would like to be able to haul the boat without issue.

Threadjack. MM 88 to the mainland is the longest stop and go down there. 3.92/8 spd./Hemi might as well have been called the Monroe County package if yer pulling anything under 9k.

You can really do either. I have the 3.92 on a 2015 Laramie CC and haven't towed yet as I only have 1000 miles on mine. On flat, calm highway thus far it seems to get around 16-18 mpg going 60 mph

My dad has 3.21 in his '14 CC Laramie and he says he gets around 21 mpg on the highway. He occasionally tows a 7,000 lb camper with junk in the trunk. He says he never thought about the gear ratio when purchasing it and has no regrets that he has the 3.21. He said it has plenty of power.

So it's really.. Would you rather have 2-4 mpg better on the highway or a little more oomff while accelerating and towing? It's hard to go wrong. If they made the 3.55 still, I would have gone with that as that's a pretty good compromise.

I have the 3.92's and 8spd in my 14' Laramie, I towed a 4k lb trailer from Las Vegas to here in Texas were I moved (1500) miles and it did awesome, didn't really notice it there even going up hills! I also have my truck leveled with 35's. It did great. Even when I had my truck in 4x4 because it was all icy and snowy it still pulled it like a champ. I was averaging about 11.4mpg for the whole trip doing about 70 the first half then about 45-50 the second half due to the **** weather. My truck right now will spin the 35's off the line if I smash the gas or even driving around if I smash it, it will bark them nicely. I'm glad I got the 3.92's and 8 spd

That 8HP90 transmission is awesome. There is where the real difference is. Google it and see the gearing and especially the spacing. Wish they would come out with a heavier version for the 25/ 35 series gas Rams. With that gearing and spacing, "Nothing" on the market today would come close to compare.

I have a 2014 Outdoorsman package with 4x4, 3.92 gears, and the 5.7L. My wife has a 2014 Durango with AWD, 3.09, and the 5.7L. Both have 8-speed transmissions, and the transmission gear ratios are the same. Both have a base weight of ~5400 lbs. Both are primarily used in hilly, suburban driving on the outskirts of Tulsa, Oklahoma (yes, Oklahoma has hills). The Durango has a slightly lower coefficient of drag than the Ram.

The Durango with the 3.09 gears gets somewhere between 0.25 and 0.5 mpg better than the Ram in day-to-day driving, which is how we put 90% of the miles on our vehicles. The Durango dash display currently reads 15.2 mpg vs. 14.8 on the Ram. The gap widens on the highway, but I don't have enough data yet to determine the difference.

I know that the dash display isn't particularly accurate, but it is accurate enough to demonstrate that a 4 MPG difference in daily driving is unlikely.

I'll be using the Ram to pull a 6,500 lb RV this summer. So far, I've only pulled a 1,500 lb motorcycle trailer. The only way I could tell the trailer was attached was by the drop in gas mileage indicated on the dash display.

yep mine pulls very well even at max capacity. when you start towing something heavy she really likes to drink tho so if towing something heavy often and over longer distances the bigger tank is a very good idea

Ordered today, 15' Limited, 4x4, 6'4" box, 3.92, LSD, trailer pac, roof, black steps (dealer install), black....no chrome pkg. Apparently they will only be available in the Gaudy Chrome for 16' and 15' ordering ends Wed so I bit the bullet.

Congrats on the purchase. You won't regret the 3.92 ratio when towing or just driving. The mpg "hit" that folks talk about here is negligible since around town you will do better than the 3.21 by a whisker.

Hey people, long time and I just wanted to update. This truck is amazing, comfortable, powerful and great mileage. Very happy with the purchase almost two years ago.

My 14 R/T has the 8 sp 3.92 and limited slip. On I 10 I had to slow and merge with other traffic or speed up a bit to be the lead/ Chose to lead and looked at the speedo reading 95 and climbing. Too easy to get a ticket.

Highest I got my 2016 8 Speed with the 3.92s is a hair over 20mpg on a long road trip. Highest I got my previous 2011 with the 5 Speed and 3.55s was 21.6mpg with some downhill driving involved. It's not a big enough difference in my book to really take it all that seriously. The 3.92s put the power down better and get up and go. I thoroughly enjoy my 8 Speed/3.92 combo and now that I've had it, I don't think I'd ever want to go back to 3.55s or 3.21s.

I am looking at buying a 15' Limited and am leaning toward 3.92 Most of my miles will be empty on single lane highway, 55-65 mph. When I do tow it will be about 5-7,000. lbs and about 10-15% of total miles driven. Who has this combo and how do you find it as a daily driver?

Thanks

I have a '14 Outdoorsman with the 3:92 rear end and the 8 spd tranny.
My trailer is a 27' hard sided travel trailer, in the weight range you're asking about.

I've driven on paved roads, gravel roads, dirt roads, and all around ****** roads, and have been very happy with the way the truck rides and drives in all conditions.
Both with and without the trailer.

That Limited you're asking about will have slightly lighter suspension, so you'll probably get an even smoother ride unloaded than I do.
Just watch your tongue weight.

Having recently done about a 4,000km trip across the country on paved highway, I couldn't be happier. The truck is a dream to drive.
A little more road noise than your average luxury car, but hey, it is a truck after all.

Just one comment about towing.
Depending on your max. tongue weight, you may want to check and see which tires that Limited comes with. Some Rams came with P rated Wranglers and some came with LT Wranglers.

The LT's are 10 ply tires, and will give you a slightly rougher ride, but I'd recommend them if you start pushing that 6k-7k weight range on your trailer.

**EDIT**
I see now this was a 2 year old post that was revived. Glad to see you're happy with your truck!

If they offered 3:55's in the Sport it would have been a tougher choice. But 3:21 vs 3:92? No problem. Minimal difference in economy as it's easier to get it rolling with the lower gears and only aepround 200 rpm difference at highway speeds. Tows 3500# like it's not there.

i have the 3.92s for max towing, so on that basis alone i would get them. my rule of thumb is you shouldn't load past 80% of max capacity.
