this maybe a bit of a funny post but oh well. I am in the market for a truck and have found that 3rd gens are in my price range. Now I know the answer I will get from majority of people is "if you want a 4th gen, save up". I do however want a 4th gen but I am good with a 3rd gen as well.

What I wanna know is if you have a 3rd gen and regret getting but please include WHY. Or if you prefer the 02 to 05 or 06 to 08

If you can't afford the 4th gen. Then why would you regret not getting one?

I mean any 3rd gen is better than going into debt.

I love my 2003, of course I'd love a quad cab 4th gen. But that's just the way it goes sometimes.

I love my 04. I prefer it to the 06-08s since I'm not a fan of their fronts. I would love a 4th gen, but I don't have any regrets about my 04. She's my baby!

I don't own a 3rd gen but in response to a year preference I would go with an 03. in 04 Chrysler went away from PCI bus and went to a CAN bus system and has a way higher failure rate. if you don't mind replacing the ipc,pcm or tipm/fcm then a newer 3rd gen might be a bit more comfortable and probably lower milage. like I said don't own a 3rd gen this is purely an observation

I've never had any of these problems or heard of any of them really being a problem. I have heard though with the 03's that they are slightly harder to mod than the 04 and up Rams.

03's are just mainly finicky to tune, and can't have trans tuning as they have a separate trans controller. If I were to recommend a truck to you, I'd try to find an 05 truck as they are the easiest to tune, and aftermarket is readily available for them.

I have had my 04 for over 10 years and still have stock block and tranny. I sometimes wish i knew about AWD being an option for that year but other than that i have no regrets.

05 is the best year IMO if your going to mod it heavy. If you want just a good daily then any of the years will work fine for you. If its a Hemi would shy away from early 04 and 03's because of springs, if its a 4.7 would get an 08 because that's when they changed intakes and cams to boost power output.

Before I got my 4th gen, I had an 04 1500 quad. I loved that truck, we bought it brand new and it was given to me when I started driving. Didn't have one issue with it. Drove strong for 9 years. Hell nothin was wrong with it when I traded it in, I just wanted a new truck lol

4th gens are nice, whenever i see a sport, It reminds me again of how much I want a fourth gen. But in no way do I regret getting my 07. I ONLY wish mine were a crew cab but those didnt get offered until the 4th gens.

Just went through this myself. 4th gen would be payments, 3rd would be paid for. Found exactly what I wanted - an 05 Daytona QC in go mango, and have not one regret about the decision.

One less monthly payment is also pretty nice.

I love my 2008 3rd Gen. Great truck. I think the body lines on the 3rd Gen's are classic.

If you're going to tune the truck, go with a 2004 or newer. Tuning the transmission works for those years. Good luck with your search!

Got a 02 quad cab,, only regret is settling for the 4.7 but the mileage was real low and it is clean. I've had a few issues with it but nothing this site didn't help with. Overall I'm happy with it

Not sure how I should exactly reply here but here goes.

I've driven/operated a 3rd-Gen. My current job has 2 of them for deliveries if I choose to use one.

I came really close to owning one since we can get them from trades or auction easily enough.

I held off and bought a 4th-Gen instead.

Only regrets is I could have gotten a 3rg-Gen and done mods to it. That said I'm loving my 4th-Gen and rarely regret the purchase of it.

I like the 3rd gens. But i think i am gonna hold out for a 4th gen. In my area i can get used 4th gen for around 20k with decent mileage and options.

Hemi 5.7 - Hedman Shorties - K&N CAI
We have had our '03 for 2 months. I have had to replace the stereo (6-cd changer broke), and one of the headers cracked. But, it also has 193k on it, so that is par for the course. Gave me an excuse to put shorties on it.

Other than that, great power, love the look, and the space inside the quad. If I had one "regret" it would be the gas mileage. I usually average under 10mpg between city and highway (winter blend fuel, sub-freezing temps, including one morning at -23, lots of 4x4 time recently due to snow and ice, and spending a lot of time sitting in the truck between classes), but, it's a Hemi and winter. I'm just used to my 15-22mpg from our '01 Explorer (15 in winter, 20-22 in summer). Don't really miss that thing.

I love my 3rd gen truck, almost 70k miles on my truck and runs strong with plenty of power. The 4th gens are growing on me and actually really like the look the of 2500s now, more so then the 1500s but the 3rd gen 07-08 front ends look so nice.

Only reason why I am even thinking of swapping my 07 1500 for a newer 1500 or maybe even a 2500 is because of the actual crew cab. I need, not want, more space for the second row. If my truck had that, I wouldn't even look or think of getting a newer vehicle.
