I have a 2016 2500 hd 6.4 hemi and want to tow a 5th wheel dry weight 9250 and GVWR 12000. Is this possible and safe.

Yes and Yes. Although I suspect you may be over your trucks GVWR- maybe.

mtofell and drittal (and likely some other guys) have more experience with that size camper on their 6.4 trucks- they will chime in soon I suspect.

What's the yellow sticker tell you (driver's door) that your payload is? 5th wheel pin weight? Go from there..

Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a towing calculator.

You'll need some weight info from the body builder's guide and I can attach that info as well if you want it.

I crunched the numbers on that size trailer and, as stated above, pin weight and other loads on the truck will get you close, if not a smidge over, your GVWR.

I'm 9040# dry weight on my 5th and about 10,500-11000# all loaded up. I'm right at (or maybe 50-100# over) my GVWR but almost 1000# under RAWR. My slider hitch weighs about 250# and when at the max I'm traveling with wife + 3 kids (7,7 & 9). All of us together weigh +/- 600#.

So, truck @ 7000#, people + some other stuff @ 800# + hitch @ 250# = roughly 1000#. Loaded pin weight of 5th is estimated to be about 2000-2100# which is right in line with the usual pin weight being 20% on a 5th.

OP - you're in the ballpark for sure. A lot depends on how much you load up the 5th and how many people and how much stuff you run with in the truck.

I added a set of Firestone airbags and love them. I did make a few runs without them and it wasn't bad. Really, no excessive rear sagging. The bags just smooth out the rythmic bouncing over dips in the road.

I bought a 33’ 5er a couple of days ago for my 2500 5.7. Hitch weight 1460lbs and dry weight just shy of 8000lbs. We don’t travel heavy but even if I load up camper to 9500lbs, that brings my hitch weight to 1700+ lbs with 500lbs(counting hitch) left before I get to payload max. Will I push the payload and even may go a little bit over? Possibly but I can tell you my truck handled the ride home great and I get very little squat when it’s hooked up. My buddy has a duramax with payload at 2300lbs and tows a 13000lb 5er and it tows great and also has very little squat. Not saying you should exceed payload but I’m just telling you my experiences so far with 5th wheels

good to hear this guy's. I'm not surprised. 2500s are de-rated intentionally.

I'm sure this is shared with the best of intentions and what I'm about to say isn't meant as a personal attack at all. BUT, things like this are printed up by magazines for the purpose of filling space and selling ads. In reality, the write-up before the chart completely misses the #1 mistake 99% of people make in not understanding how and why they ended up overweight.

They talk about tires, hitches, tow packages, blah, blah blah. How about helping and educating folks about the relationship between people in the truck, items in the bed and the impact on tow rating????? This is the ugly step child that no manufacturer or salesman will EVER tell you. And it's completely misunderstood by EVERY person that comes in here wondering why the ass of their truck is dragging on the pavement and their headlights are pointing at the sky.
