So now the cold weather is coming back and I used the heater for the first time in a long time. But my compressor keeps kicking in and out, what would cause that? Thanks.

I believe it does that normally when it is in defrost mode.

The A/C compressor is supposed to work in all defrost positions as well as the A/C settings. The purpose of running in the defrost settings is to first cool the air to remove moisture then heat the dry air to pull condensation off the window.

Dudeman is correct, the compressor cycles about every 20-30 seconds.
