My 2001 Ram 2500 is having issues with its AC and I hope somebody might have some advice. The AC in my truck has started just cutting off at random usually after the truck has been going a while (20-30 min). Doesn't seem to matter if it's in town or on the highway, but acceleration will bring the cold back in an instant. Anyone here had similar experiences? It's been HOT here in AR and I'd like some idea of the problem... Thanks!

Was wondering about that fan clutch. Is that a DIY repair?

Fan clutch is an easy DIY. I do not think this is a fan clutch problem though. The fact that acceleration makes it work again suggests to me that the compressor is failing.

Thanks for everyone's input. This shutting off started 2 summers ago, and has very slowly been getting worse since. Just that this summer has been really hot, so it's more noticeable.

I have a 99 ram with the opposite problem. When I accelerate my AC stops working but when let off the gas or just constant speed works fine. Have not figured mine out yet. If you find out what it is let me know, cause could be related.

Rockdude....try googling "Wild Vents" and see if that is your issue.

I can see that being the reason the vents change but not the a/c cutting out...

I have the same issue. I've read that my ac system could be freezing up somewhere, not letting the freon to flow.. I usually turn my ac off for like 5 or 10 minutes and then it blows cold again. I assume because the frozen blockage thawed and let it flow again. I believe our systems have orifice tubes in them? Therefore I want to say that's where it would be freezing up?

Plausible. Or there is moisture in it allowing it to freeze. Being a sealed system it shouldn't really freeze. The orafice is on the passenger side along the fender. You will see a section of foil tape. Thats where it changes from liquid to gas.

Sounds like a vacuum leak to the temp blend door. They commonly crack where the go through the firewall.

The blend door is on an electric stepper motor on 2000 and up models. I know 98 is a cable that runs to the blend door. You may be thinking of the vacuum switch that changes the direction that causes the wild vent problem.

Try giving it a recharge. The kit is cheap enough to get and is easy to do yourself. If your AC is weak, it might just need a recharge.
