I have had my 2017 Ram for a month now and have 7800km on it (4850miles) thanks to a trip from Toronto to Florida for march break, well I have the 121L tank and I found that I can get close to 950km to a tank with 91 to 94 octane and 800 plus or minus a bit when using 87 octane. I have only put in 87 a couple of times because of this, I have never had a computer to point out the difference before. I have a 2010 Challenger R/T with a 6sp so always had to use 91 plus on that, but don't have a computer telling me my mileage. I guess it makes sense in a way an engine works harder with 87 than 91 but didn't think it would make that big a difference, in Ontario the cost of fuel is 103 per L for 87 and 120 to 125 for 91 to 94 so to fill the truck would be 150$ on the high end and 124$ on the low end Can. When I was in the US it was 71$ to fill at about 2.75$ guess we get stung a bit for living in the Great White North.
Even with the engine able to run on 87 is it better on the engine just running 91.

I'm curious to know about this - anyone else get better mileage putting in high octane? I wouldn't mind spending a little extra to get better fuel mileage..

I run 93 now and I got an increase of almost 2MPG and she doesn't struggle as much, it's not much to boast about, but at 180K on the OD any less stress I can put on it the better.

I've never gotten better mileage by using higher octane. It must be a 2017 Ram thing.

Oh wow, thanks for he information. I know in my 2017 Ram 1500 Sport owners manual it recommends 89 octane for for 5.7L and 87 octane for the 3.6L. Since I have the 5.7L I use 89 octane.

Based off your information I will need to try the higher octane. I have he 32 gallon gas tank as well.

It actually says 89 is recommended and not to use higher in the manual. I do get better with 89 over 87 though

It is possible you get better mpg with higher octane fuel, the Hemi has a knock sensor that will retard timing if it detects any spark knock.
More likely, a lot of premium fuel has no ethanol, regular usually does. No ethanol = better mpg
Is it enough to offset the higher price of premium? not sure

Maybe I should read the manual I thought 87 was ok to run with the 5.7 so that might have been the real issue for the mileage increase. Computer was adjusting for the lower octane rating 89 to 87, I was told that I could run 87 in the Ram so I didn't check the owners manual on minimum octane.

higher octane DOES NOT get you better gas mileage. there is no IF or maybe, octane is only relevant to what the compression ratio is with an internal combustion engine. Yes this truck can run 87, and the computer will retard or advance the timing to offset any knock, if anything you may see a light dip in mpg's if you go below the recommended octane your vehicle requires, but going any higher than what is recommend ( 89 octane for the hemi ) will literally yield you nothing extra, no extra horsepower, no extra mpg's.....nothing. you will have less money in your wallet however.....

Google it and you will find a ton of info on octane and what its really relevant to.

Thanks for the info. Do you run the recommend 89 or 87?

I get about 1 to 1.5 mpg better with 89 vs 87. So around 30 extra miles per tank. Offsets the cost of 89 some but not all. I think its worth it to have engine running better and more efficiently, maybe keep it cleaner too.

My manual says the following:

The use of premium gasoline is not recommended, as it will not provide any benefit over regular gasoline in these engines

The only way you'll get better mpg is the lighter wallet, which means yer carrying less weight, so the gas will go farther.......:roflsquared:

You can really only compare it if you are driving the exact same roads in the same direction. If you are comparing different roads or directions then it isn't a valid comparison.

For example I went skiing on march break and drove 750km to the ski hill. From my home it is mostly uphill the majority of the way and it was extremely cold. I averaged about 16L/100km which is about the same as city driving. On the trip on the way home it was warmer and goingnthe opposite direction we got 10.9L/100km.

I suspect a lot of your mileage difference is from the roads, not the octane level.

I was only going by what the EVIC was telling me not sure why it would give that difference in distance till empty. I'm getting around 13.2 to 13.5L per 100km with it right now will see how it likes 89 Octane, with 89 it does contain 5% ethanol to none in 91 and above is there any benefit to using fuel without ethanol?
With the Challenger with the 5.7 it takes 91 but run 94 octane when I drive it hard.

The only increased fuel mileage I've seen was due to filling up with certified non-ethanol gasoline (89 Oct); about 2 mpg better than with the 10% ethanol mid grade. The $.50/gal premium over the 10% ethanol mid grade, for the non ethanol gas isn't worth it in my view. When I tried a tank or two of 87, didn't see any real change in mileage. The non ethanol gas is sold in a lake region, and is aimed at boaters primarily, at least around here.
