Living on a farm and having a love for hunting has given me a love for the outdoors. But I have never been hiking before...at least not seriously. I have been camping numerous times, but usually just at camp grounds. My girlfriend would like to start hiking and camping so I am looking to get her some equipment for Christmas. What are the essentials needed to go on long hikes/wilderness camping, and what additional items are great to have? If you have any insight to brands that will be helpful.

Are there any certain types of hiking shoes/boots I should look into?

Depends on terrain and how extreme the hike. Preferably water proof but that's a personal preference. Don't skimp on hiking boots either.

If there are Mosquitos around be sure to get a Thermacell repellent
Also, if you're hiking any kind of rough terrain get a hiking pole /walking stick.
