Check engine light

My 2012 won't start, I'm pretty sure I got a bad tank of fuel just by the way it's acting, got it running barely last night and got it home and on the way, the engine light came on. Is there any way to get a code out of this without a scanner?

What kind of gas are you using?

It was just 87 octane, but I called the gas station and they fessed up about it, turns out the code was a random misfire code, I got about a half tank out and filled it with fresh 91 and some additive and it's clearing up, still not good but it's at least drive able, the gas station is supposed to be making arrangements with people tomorrow to remedy the issue

How did they give you bad gas? Ive never heard of this before.

Said something about bottom of the tank or something, the gas station manager really didn't make much sense but he did admit that there were other people with the same problems from filling up on the same day.

probaly water or contaminated fuel.. I'm a service writer and I see a few times a month
