I'm building a 5.9 magnum that has no miles on it, basicly brand new. I was looking for a cam but I'm really confused on the duration. I don't want to buy one and have it be to heavy. It's a daily driver. Can some one help me out.

What are your goals/intentions for the truck? What intake manifold and heads are you using?

a very small bump up would be a 318 cam in a 360. other wise contact hipotek. he uses comp cams with a regrind for specific profiles. or buy off the shelf from comp.

I cammed mine with an off the shelf option.
No. 318 has more lift yes but less duration and will not make more power. The extra cubes of the 360 combined with lower duration would actually lose power. And the lift gained really isn't any more than 1.7 roller rockers would give you. And factory cam bearings are probably trashed once factory cam comes out, they usually are.

For the effort and cost that goes into changing the cam, if you just want more lift stick to rocker arm ratio change.

you got the spects with that claim! that's not the way I remember it.
5.9: 274/264 .410"
5.2: 264/250 .432"

What you remember is a crap rumor started by people who think lift is the only factor in a cam choice. They don't understand it and it spread like wildfire. I was a victim of it at one point too. Along with that there's the belief that the 5.2 and 5.9 use the same program/map in the pcm. That is also false

looking at it again. the run after 98 on a 360 cam is stunted. so if you have a 96/97 360 the 318 cam wount do anything for you. its the 318 cam through the years that didn't change. the 360 had its balls chopped in the name of the EPA.

the 98 360 cams just have less, no matter how you index the center line. re-center a 318 cam to 108*. so what. we are talking about lift and duration.

Jesus you're thick. Degreeing a cam means using a DEGREE WHEEL to verify cam specs ie duration. The 98+ 360 cams are not smaller as that dodgeinfo site you're using claims. They've been tested. This has nothing to do with how you index it. The lobes simply didn't change.

Your last comment, considering i never once mentioned advance or retard I'm going to assume you're simply calling me ********. That in itself is hilarious coming from the guy with the "hopped block" and recommending a 318 cam for more power in a 360 lol

the cam provider will tell you the duration for free, when you buy it. one thing you have failed to do for your flat faced 2001 360.
simply using a degree wheel is to set the cam and crank gear, so to install the chain properly. or use the DOT TO DOT method. advanced or ********, "what ever you prefer!"
you can advance a stock 110c-line cam back to 108 and favor the intake stroke. this does produce more with most cams including magnum components. advancing a cam will draw the horse power and torque curve to a lower rpm- before the red line. to retard a cam is just a waste of rpm and my time!
huh what was that?
you need more tools than a degree wheel to determine cam duration!

You're trying talk **** to a 22yr old for having a bolt-on setup? Bish please you MIGHT make 25-30hp more than me roflmao.

Dude you bounce around a lot. We weren't talking about advancing or retarding the cam. Why are you suddenly jumping to it? The only thing being discussed was overall spec.

And as for needing more tools, no **** sherlock. You obviously don't understand the concept of the "generic/general description". You had a problem with my use of the word degree. I didn't use it incorrectly, you degree a cam if you're trying to verify specs. I wasn't going in depth and describing every step to it, simply clearing the air about what exactly is being talked about

any ways after all that was cleared up! the 318 cam stayed the same through out almost matching the early 94- 97 cam. the 98 360s fell flat. that's where all the confusion is. what a screwed up way to have a discussion on cams!

No, the 360 cam didn't change in 98. Again, others have degreed factory cams since those claims were made and proven it false
