Has any one had a problem with a coolant smell, but no leak. I have faintly noticed it before, but I had a strong smell of coolant plowing this weekend. I know I have heard people talk about this problem before. Is there a recall/campaign on this?

Thanks

Every winter I get the same smell when I first fire up the heater for a long drive. Had it for 5 years / 62K miles and no leaks.

Late to the game, but yes. I can smell hot coolant when parking the truck after a drive that fully warms the engine. It matter not if it's summer or winter. There is NO visible coolant leakage. I never had to add coolant either. I was going to take it in for warranty service, but I just can't stand the usual, "can not duplicate customer complaint" I always get when I bring it in for service. I wonder what the percentage is for dealer service repairs under warranty.

I am going to send it to the dealer. I am a mechanic so I just pressure tested it. I do not want to touch anything really and have it screw with the warranty.

Same as most have reported... I get the smell but no leaks & have yet to have to top it off.

The only time I had to top it off is the first time I took the cap off. A **** load of air came out, so I'm assuming there was just air trapped in it from the factory that and it wasn't all bled out for some reason. Since then I haven't had to add anything and I have had it a little over a year.

Hi everyone,

Whenever you do decide to take your Ram into the dealer, let us know via direct message. We can get a Case Specialist involved who'll work with you and the dealership toward a solution. Thanks for your time.

I just brought mine in yesterday to get a harness replaced on my ram boxes. I am new to the truck about 1 1/2 months and have noticed the smell of coolant from time to time in front of the vehicle after shut off. I asked the dealership to pressure test and look into it. They did everything and found no leaks. I had a 2016 1500 with 5.7 before and never had this issue. What should I do next or is this no considered normal for the 6.4?

I have this smell in my 2015 6.4, and I had it in my 2011 1500 5.7. I don’t worry too much as long as the reservoir is full, and the truck doesn’t overheat. It does annoy me though.

We had this in our 2010 charger, but it stopped after a year. Had 2013 Dart that was very strong odor, and would leave a film on windshield for the 4.t years we had it. 2017 wrangler had the odor. My 2018 RAM does not have any odor. First Mopar this decade without coolant odor. Maybe just lucky. Since I never noticably lost coolant, I imagined coolant seeping through the cheap thin walled heater core.

I have the same smell in my truck, my 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee and my sons 06 Audi A3. No leaks in any of them and we have not had to add coolant. So it could be anything that causes it, cooling of the heater core who knows.

Unless you are losing coolant I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I had a coolant smell on mine too. At first I couldn't find a leak anywhere. But over time I was able to see the dried coolant (pink) on both sides of the radiator near the end caps

My 2014 has always been like that. No leaks......early explanations mentioned something about hose material allowing fumes out blah blah blah...who knows......

Interesting..
Just a tidbit of information. I've seen the machines that fill the radiator/cooling systems in these truck in operation at Warren Truck. Before the system is filled, it is pulled into a vacuum, leak down checked. Then while still in a vacuum, the coolant in pumped in and pressure tested. The machine pulls the excess pressure off, disconnects and returns all in less than a 2 minute cycle time(IRC).

I have the same odor with my 6.4. I've read somewhere here that the odor is seeping out from the overflow tank, which might explain why there's no visible loss or leaks.
