what's a reasonable range for mileage when it comes to shopping for a used Cummins...i know that at 100k the CTD is just entering it's prime but there are many reasonably priced 2nd gen diesels over 250K..would it be worth considering with that many miles?

I think most 3rd gens are typically 130k or more (atleast around here)
I would say be comfortable buying one with up to 170-180k miles I think depending on what the rest of the truck says to me
My buddy has an 03 that was right about 260k miles on it. He bought it with 218 two years ago from a guy that drove it from Indiana to Texas atleast once a week. Other then typical maintenance he hasnt had any problem with it

I looked at a 2nd gen some years ago. it was knocking on 300k miles. my dad, and some other guys he knows (all diesel mechanics) said it was about equal to a gasser with 100k.
sadly, the trans was slipping pretty bad on that truck and I passed b/c he wouldn't budge on the price.

Give you a feel for high mileage trucks...
Dodge Cummins Milestones

1 at 600K miles, 1 at 800K miles and my big boy at 1.1 MILLION and still rolling...

They are but the trucks aren't built for it

The trucks can handle it too it just a matter of maintaining the frame and axles like the engine.

Here is a 20 year old truck hauling firewood and still going well after 600K miles.

The trans is always the bad part ... cummins didnt make the trans but you can find shops to build a trans that will last just as long as the engine . I know , I did .

My advice is to get an nv4500 or nv5600! they last longer than the stock automatics!

at ten years and 245k i dont see that with resonable care mine will go another 250k and be alot less expensive than 2 new ones to go the same distance. there will be expenses for things that wear out, thats just to be expected. i am just going to keep mine on the road and enjoy the longevity.
