Noticed knock/clunk at idle that I can't pin point. It's random with no ryhym to it. Doesn't affect my driving but it's annoying when parked or at a drivethru . I'm sure it can't be good.

I can't help you with your issue, but good to see you on here...I remember you from the good ole GMFS days.

Hi Jameson,

Keep us posted--we're happy to document what you're experiencing, and reach out to the dealership if you go in to have it diagnosed.

Certainly does not sound like an internal issue.. Sounds like a Bearing trying to chirp, like a water pump, alternator, etc..

That doesn't sound like generic Hemi tick. How long has it been going on? What oil do you run?

It definitely isn't a hemintick. It's a random click/knock with no constant rythym. I'm gonna stethoscope it.

Check your plugs to see if something is bouncing around inside one of the cylinders

It's such a slow knock it seems like it's like a pulle or tensioner making the noise.

With a cold engine, take the belt off and run it for a minute or so. You can also use a piece of garden hose about 4 feet long… Went into your ear and one and moving around the engine compartment.

That was supposed to read one end to your ear and the other end moving around in the engine compartment.

Could it be your a/c clutch engaging and disengaging.

You said its a slow noise, which makes me doubt, but it could be piston slap. with an idle at ~ 600 rpm that's kind of slow if the impact is irregular.

Piston slap is impact of the piston (usually piston skirt area) against the cylinder wall. Its sideways movement of the piston against the cylinder bore, not up and down motion. Every piston driven engine and even most compressors have a certain amount of piston slap; usually when the engine is cold and the pistons haven't heated enough to expand. Excessive piston slap happens when the piston to cylinder liner clearance is too large; usually through wear. Piston slap usually gets quieter as the engine gets hotter.

Of course, really sloppy mismatched pistons and cylinder bores at manufacturing can also be a possibility, but I've always thought sloppy manufacturing of that sort was more a GM/Chevy thing. Their forums are full of guys whining about piston slap.

If your noise stays as the engine warms it could also be rod noise. That tends to get louder as the engine gets hotter. If a rod bearing is damaged you'll also notice your oil has a silvery look to it when you change it.

If you change your own oil, you can also cut open your oil filter and inspect for metal which would potentially confirm a more significant issue.

Hope its nothing, or just a pulley.
