What grille do you have on the front of your Ram? I have the Lone Star edition and the grille seems to be very restrictive. I went with the open Chrome (I think Longhorn grille) and it helped a lot. I need to tow west, but my engine temps and oil temps seem to be lower with this grille.

I got up to 260 on oil temp and 220 on engine temp before the swap. I was in 96 degree weather last month and only saw 237 on oil temp and 206 on engine temp. Both of these sets of numbers are with a 190 engine tstat. I'm towing a 6000lb (32') travel trailer.

I've considered a grill swap as well. I have the big horn grill (horizontal chrome slats) .
I haven't towed with the truck again but I'm supposed to take it in today for the ticking which seems to be the manifold bolts.
The problem is that I feel like 70% of the service writers don't know what typical temps are when towing so they're not going to provide me with much useful information.
I believe my oil temps were primarily high because I was on it pretty hard trying to maintain my speed going up the hills.
I think if I let off a bit going up the hills and let my speeds drop going up them I'd be better off.
I'm looking at a few 2500s this week thkughto potentially avoid the risk in it's entirety.
I'll let you all know what I hear today

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah, can certainly understand the 2500 thought.

I've followed this thread for the whole time. All along, I thought, Just slow down a bit going up those long hills. Seems like the sensible thing to do. Less work equals less heat. But guys, being guys, don't adjust what they do. They throw money at it.

It's kind of a balance of doing both. Slowing down could result in the trans shifting more than it would if I maintained my flat speed which would result in higher rpm's anyway. So finding the perfect balance is key.

Yes please let us know what they say about those temperatures towing uphill, (mine got up to 280), and what they say and how they treat you with your manifold bolts....

My oil temp hit 270 this weekend when I was pulling my 5000lb enclosed trailer up a steep hill. Coolant was 220 and trans was 190. I run full synthetic oil but still crazy how hot it gets. Once I got over the hill it went down to 230-240. I was doing 70 mph over the hill and the truck has no problem going faster but don’t want the oil to get any hotter than that.

I also have 180 therm. With grille shutters removed, efan on at 200 and clutch fan on with the big horn grille. I am also thinking maybe the big horn grille doesn’t flow as good as others.

Recommended oil weight. I'm running Pennzoil Platinum 5w20.

I've thought about, but I don't tow all of the time. I'm worried that I would forget to disable MDS and have normal driving issues.

Fully agree with 69. But, lets see what others say regarding your MDS concern.

JMO: the 20wt oil is strictly for gas mileage, not protection. If all you're doing is going to the grocery store then you can get by with the 20wt for awhile. Hook a 5 or 6 k trailer to it and work it or just tach it up a couple of times( and who of us haven't done that) and you're pushing that 20wt possibly beyond what it was designed for. FCA claims we have to run the 20wt because of MDS, and that is BS. All they're trying to do is protect their precious gas mileage.

I have ran 5w30 and now have 4qts 10w30 and 3qts of 5w30 in mine and have zero problems from it.
I plan on going back to 5w30 before winter hits.
5w20 is to thin for these trucks and they only recommend it to help get fuel mileage out of them.

I don't tow at all, but I do like to play sometimes. I have ran a couple different 30wts and never had any troubles with them. Now with 5/30 redline my MDS is working the smoothest it ever has, even better than with the 20wts. If I had the stock muffler on it would virtually be hard to tell if it was in or out of MDS.

I'm interested in hearing what you're results are in you're tests. My opinion is strictly what I hear, engine noise wise, and seat of the pants what I feel, plus recommendations from some that have been here alot longer than me.

Your correct about the BigHorn grill not flowing air well. There are only small oval openings in between the cross slats.
The three best factory grills for air flow is the basket weave (Longhorn), egg create (Outdoorsman) and the RAM Pig Snout grill. See attached pics

Bighorn grills flow just fine. Many with bighorns have towed 7 or 8 thousand pounds cross country without issue. If the grill was/is an issue, we surely would be well aware of it by now.

When I hit 280 in my big horn going up the hills to Payson and the rim with my 7500 lb trailer I was running 5 quarts of Redline 10w30 and 2 quarts of 5 W 30.
