Where can you get them? (any other place than the stealership...)

I've been looking all over the place to source front brake backing plates and can only find the rear ones... Mine are almost gone, and since I am about to get the wheel hub/bearings changed I wanted to have new backing plates.

What happens if I don't install any backing plates? I don't do offroad, however I live up north and lots of snow abrasives and ice melters... tons of road grime...

The only manual I have access to while im at work are the ones for my 03'. According to my manual the brake shields, Pass side PN: 52010138AA and Driver side PN: 52010139AA arent available from many websites but...

on moparpartsoverstock each side is $26.75 each

on factorychryslerparts each side is $29.36 each.

According to both of these websites they will fit an 02'

what is the dealership asking for them?

I'm based in Canada and you don't want to know the ridiculous price the Dealer is asking for... The cheapest quote I got from a dealer in my general area (about 30 miles from my place) is 58$/each...

I paid 138$ tax in for the front hubs... I'm feeling stupid having to pay so much for 2 pieces of stamped sheet metal...

Thank's for the online references I'll have a look. However sometimes shipping to Canada kills the fair prices you guys have in the States and the closest Border Mail depot is 65 miles away so it is worth it but for pricier or very hard to find items.

I'll keep you posted on what I end up doing.

Anyone know what can happen if I don't put any?

here is a few pages from the Cummins guys (mostly northerners) talking about them.
Are disc brake dust shields necessary? - Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum

Also found a Pair on amazon with free shipping for $36.00, but as you mentioned the shipping cost to canada.

really? I thought I had made sure they were from the front suspension group... imma re-check just because

Edit: yeah, I pulled it straight from the front brake assy. Plus the covers arent even listed for the rear brakes in the manual. odd.
