Hi, I have a 2015 with the 8spd and 3.21 gear(open) configuration. I got the truck in a deal so didn't have a choice. But unfortunately I'm beginning to use it to tow cars here and there. I have an auto hauler. Used to have a Cummins which was amazing at towing but well I needed a 4 dr. I already tried hauling the car hauler with just my atv on it and I found the truck
Constantly searching for gears and getting horrid mpg. Now my idea was to get 3.92 gears and a locker but I can't seem to find a good deal on some. I did find a 3.55 and 4.10 option for a good value but not sure if the work is worth for 3.55s and I'm afraid 4.10s are a bit high as it is my daily driver.

Anyone on here have 4.10s on their 8spd that can help me out? What is your rpm range unloaded on the highway at 70?

Felt like I was towing a car! And although it has plenty of horsepower I honestly feel my dads 2006 Silverado z71 with 3.73 gears toes so much better just not as powerful obviously. But it feels a lot more stable at 60-70mph than the ram.

Take the rpms your running now at 70 mph in 8th gear and divide by .782
That should get you in the ballpark.

Alright I'll try that later today. Right now I don't do much highway but where I'm moving to literally 90% of my commute to work will be highway. So I don't want to kill too much of my highway mileage either.

Your trailer is nose high and your weight is near or slightly to the rear of the axles.

If you want a more stable tow, get the trailer level or slightly nose low. Move the tractor farther forward so you have more tongue weight. That will stabilize it a lot

Going to 4.10s from a 3.21 gear will help a lot. If i ever change gears I'll go straight to a 4.30, but i have 3.73s now and for me and what i tow, the 3.73s do just fine.

It was very stable, trailer rows great but yea it's made for a car so it was a bit high lol, but my issue is the drivetrain. It's allover the place. Constant gear searching and it won't just find a gear and relax. Feels like an older truck I had with 2.73 where it just couldn't get to overdrive so it's just screaming on the highway lol. Had a Silverado SS with 4.10s and that thing was stable but the revs were pretty high up there. And although this one is 8spd just want to hear some input from someone who has them on now.

I went from 3.21 to 3.92 and while I haven't towed yet I'd say that highway hasn't changed much. I might have lost a hair of mpg. I'm on 32" tires on stock 20" rims. If you're mostly commuting and never going to haul real heavy stuff don't do the gear swap. It is really not cost effective for 2014+ trucks unless you find donor axles for cheap to swap out. I made the dealer pay for most of my swap at the time of purchase and 4wheelparts did the install. I paid 800 out of the total 4k for parts and labor.

Well labor for me is about $250 and the gearing with a locker and a master kit for the diff is about $700. So it's something I consider because I do tow quite a bit. I may stick to the 4.10s. I emailed the company and they said they do offer the 3.92, but I'd like to see if anyone has 4.10s here. Did the calculations online and the rpm difference isn't substantial.

Are you 2wd? Because the front diff is all parts expense from buying a new diff.

I have the 6 speed but the 6 & 8 have the same top gear ratio. I'm at 2350 RPMS at 80 MPH.
And I don't feel I lost any top end, this thing digs hard from 60-120MPH

I had a 06 z71 and in no way or forum would that gutless truck come close to pulling like my Ram no way.

Put 95k on that truck and could not take it anymore, should have sold it years before but really like everything else but gutless.

Notice what I said lol not as powerful. Horsepower is not there but the drivetrain is solid, when my Cummins wasn't available or doing other work it always towed great. Can't talk bad about it it's been a great truck to my dad. But I agree the 5.3 was lacking horses. But for what it is it does great.

Hate to bring this back up but had to switch back to my dually for quite some time from constantly towing, it just tows so much better. BUT before I sell this thing I’m thinking of really selling the dually over it since it’s an actual 4dr and but more practical for my dad and wife to drive. But I tow at least once a month. Would really like some input on higher geared guys. Especially with aftermarket gears and lockers.

Dually for reference. 2001 6spd 24v cummins.

I know it’s apples to oranges but I’d like to at least get it close to it. The diesel is stock so it’s not like it’s a powerhouse. But whatever I freaking strap to the thing it pulls like a champ. But whichever one stays will be daily driver and will most likely have kids in it. This is the hardest decision of my life! [emoji23]

That sucks-
Gears will help especially if you use tow haul, I suspect a 4:10 would suit u just fine.
I can't see ur sig-
I assume you have the 5.7?

If you can do gears for a reasonable price then I would. with gears your "mds" will activate easier and hold longer as the motor will not have to work as hard to maintain speed. So your "HWY mpg" won't be affected as you think. If ur tire set up and suspension set up is going to stay the same then 4:10"s should be perfect. If you plan to lift or lvl then go to maybe a 4:30?

Towed a camper with it and it did it decently. Aside from gear searching quite a bit and being a bit gutless UNTIL it reaches the right gear. So I know for sure the trailer with the car on it will hit the drivetrain hard.

My setup will stay the same because surprisingly it does great with the McCauhey drop and the airlift 1000 bags but worse case can always upgrade that a little more.
