Just picked up a 2014 2500 whining noise already....

I just picked up a 2014 2500 ST a few weeks ago. Love the truck but it has a whine that sounds like the rear diff. I couldn't get up to highway speeds when I test drove it and I assumed a little more drivetrain noise was expected in a HD truck (this is my first one). The truck only has 24,000 miles and still is covered under the factory drivetrain warranty so it goes in to the dealer tomorrow. They went on a ride with me and confirmed that it shouldn't sound like it does. I thought I'd sign up and share how it goes. I see lots of post about noise but this one is 50-65mph and I'm between coasting and accelerating. Another point of interest, this truck has a factory 5th wheel package so I'm sure it was used to pull a trailer. Wish me luck.

Welcome. Sounds like it may be pinion bearing. As long as they can duplicate the problem as it sounds like they can I'm sure they'll be able to fix it.

That would be great! Hoping it's not ******* for too long. Camping season is here!

Dealer's are usually super quick and getting things done, assuming they find the problem and have the parts. This is one of the main reasons I get my vehicles serviced and repaired at the dealers. I know I'm paying a bit more (after the warranty is gone, of course), but it's done in hours or days instead of weeks. Even the best independent repair shops just seem to take forever at times.

I have similar symptoms, dealer has heard it, about 6-7 times now it has been in there for that noise. Its obviously something with the rear diff, and my dealer says its normal.. Although in his defense we drive brand new one with only a few mile son it and it was worse than mine in decel. i think Ram pays some guy and his buddies in a side lot to assemble the rear diffs in these trucks, no actually that would probably be better!

At Any rate, I am going to pay to have mine rebuilt after camping season. I have 11,700 miles on my truck currently and it started at 1800 miles.

I'm paying to have it replaced for piece of mind and basically so i dont go insane trying to inform dealers that just because another truck does it, doesnt mean its normal, it means theres more than one truck with a problem.

Great, I'm hoping I don't have the same problem. I've only had it 3 weeks. They did ride along with me and say that it shouldn't sound like that. I didn't get any news from them today so hopefully tomorrow.

The dealer just called and said to pick up the truck. They are now saying that the noise is normal with the 4.10 rear. I think its odd that the tech. said it wasn't normal when we went for a drive but whatever. They also said they had one a few months ago with the same noise and verified it with one of the engineers at the factory that it was normal. At least I will have a document stating that there is no problem in case there is a issue. Maybe I'm just not used to the noise that the HD trucks make?

I just don’t know. Even with the radio muted I don’t hear any whines coming from my truck with 4.10's. Wife occasionally drives it away and I don't hear anything at all from outside of it either.

LOL.... this is such a typical Ram response. If it moves and isn't on fire it's "operating as intended" and get it the hell out of here. If you ask for clarification when you go pick it up it will undoubtedly be some BS over-technical line about fluid movement and gears meshing with other syncro-matic parts due to Teflon clutch plates, and that's it's actually a good thing to hear the noise.

Overall, I love my Ram and feel you get the most for your money by far with this brand. But, the dealer support and honestly sucks compared to other brands. Without exception, every time I'm in for an oil change or service I am told or overhear some total line of crap like this post.

I’m not sure what to do at this point. I noticed this morning that when I take it out of gear, all the noise stops. I have a video of the noise and it definately isn’t normal. I bought this truck to tow a camper and now I’m a bit afraid to.

First, try a different dealer, some people have luck with that.

Johnny Im in exactly the same boat. I tow a near 10K camper . I paid someone to take the cover off (something 2 dealers refused to do even after 7 trips in for the same problem) and check it out. I had no Metal shavings beyond what you would expect from breaking in a diff.. No weird wear patterns etc..Bearings seemed fine etc. I think its just the gear mesh or pinion depth. i think its very critical with these big diffs. I had mine checked out by a third party to verify it wasnt going to explode on me with all that weight being towed behind me. I have absolutely zero faith in Ram tech at this point.. If I could have less than zero i would.

In short Im betting you are safe.. Most people who have a whin ein the rear diff never experience a problem beyond the noise.. Now if it turns out that its an actual bearing or something then it could be bad. Yours doesnt sound like a bearing though. This has been pretty well documented, It'***** or miss with them. BUT these are big heavy duty gears, and chances of outright failure are very slim I would think.

I only pull a 6,000 lb camper now but we are looking at upgrading which is why I bought this truck. Looking at a smaller 5th wheel (29 ft). Probably in the 11,000 lb gvwr range or a larger travel trailer. Thanks for the input so far. I'll update as I hear.

So the dealer called last night and said that they opened a star case. They said they haven't heard anything yet other than the noise is normal. I told them that if it was normal, all trucks would have this noise and if i test drove a new truck that sounded like this, I would never buy it. He actually said that he would be willing to "just start replacing parts". I have a camping trip at the end of May so if the rear gears are replaced, I would either not be able to break the gears in properly or I will have to cancel the trip. It amazes me that they say this is normal but I've driven a 2015 with the same gears and an f-150 with 4.30 gears and neither have any noise a all. He said he would let me know today of any updates.

Johnny, do a wellness check. Have the dealer pull the cover (or a third party like I did) and make sure there are no Obvious points of failure (chipped teeth, a lot of metal in your diff fluid, etc.. Check the pinion depth, and then have them make sure everything rotates freely so that bearing arent an issue. If it seems O.k with all of that (mine did) then it's just noisy. Not that it doesnt need fixed, but go ahead and finish camping season THEN have it replaced. This is what I chose to do for the exact reason you mention. Im already lined up with several camping trips over the summer and early fall and I can't break in a rear diff in between. You know they recommend not going over 50 mph for the first 500 miles when towing, correct?
