Used to work with a guy who bought some stuff that you would spray on while the engine are was cold (i.e. early in the morning) the go drive it or get the engine area up normal temp and it would expand all over the engine bay and look great.

Like, 'off the lot' new, or 'pimped out shiny stuff sprayed all over everything' new?

An occasional trip to the carwash (utilizing caution) is all I've ever done to keep it like 'new off the lot'.

Can't help ya otherwise,,, =)

I wipe mine down with simple green, then use Armor All on the black plastic, and rubber hoses. I use the shop vac with brush on hood insulation. Finally i wax the inner fender that is under hood.

I wouldn't spray any of that **** on it, that stuff just collects dirt. Best thing to do is a quick wipe down every time you wash and use a quick detail spray.

Simple green, rinse, and wipe. I've only used a protectant once and never again under the hood or else you'll always be wiping off the dust it attracts. If you want shiny that's fine just be prepared to do more work.

An occasional spray at the car wash (with caution) won't have detrimental effects.

Don't blast the bajesus out of the electronics/wiring/etc. No need for HIGH pressure anywhere,,, Doesn't need to be done EVERY time either,,,

I spray with all purpose cleaner (Adams) and use a long hair boars hair brush to loosen the dirt, and hose down. I used to use Adams In n Out spray, but have since moved on to Meguiars Synthetic X-press Spray wax on a towel, and wipe down the plastic and accessible paint.

Yeah, a regular rinse or blow off with the compressor should keep things looking nice. Stay away from using any type of detailing spray or products(Armor All, etc). Baby wipes/cleaning wipes work pretty good as well if it's not totally disgusting in there.

No.... it doesn't make me feel better because the next engine bay will be even better and mine will still look like hell.

This. Simple green is an effective tool for under hood cleaning.

I have Chemical Guys Back to Black for my hoses and plastics. Gunk doesn't pile up any more than it does with no products.
