Whats up everyone my name is Jose im new to this site and also new to the ramforums! So i got a question hopefully you guys can help me out. So i got a new truck about 1month ago its a 2005 ram 1500 5.7L and after i purchased the truck i drove it for about 5 days. I prob put a lil over 500 miles. Truck ran good and strong. But when i took to get inspected i hate to say this but the truck shut off in the middle of the inspection long story short im a mechanic myself and i took it home and pull the head out and saw my valve dropped and my piston is into pieces so i got a new rebuilt engine. I honestly dont get how the valve dropped idk if the mechanics in the shop beat on it or they rev the crap out of the truck or what because i took it to them running. And i got it out not running. But i should be getting my new engine this week now, what type of oil should i use to break it in? How many miles? Here are some pic of the truck...

Hi Jose and welcome to RF. I researched this question when I rebuilt my engine a few years ago and came to the conclusion that there isn't really much of a break in period on these newer engines with the roller lifters and cams. I went ahead ran conventional 5W-20 with the zinc additive for the first 500 miles, changed the oil and ran conventional again then switched to full synthetic at 3000 miles. Before you start the engine for the first time be sure to build up some oil pressure first by either priming the oil pump or removing the ASD relay and cranking the engine. Nice truck. :happy107:

I don't know anything about rebuilding but I would start with conventional break it in for a 1000 miles tops then change oil again. A really great conventional oil is pennzoil in the gold bottle. May even want to run that for another cycle then switch it over to a synthetic it should ensure it breaks in nice and will last you a long time.

Jose, First WELCOME to the group! Very nice looking truck! I am not a gear head so not much help. BUT I would just stay with manufacture spec oil. And like mentioned change it the first 500/1000 miles. Then do 3000 miles, and either swap to full synthetic after that or stay with the dino oil. Just as long as it get changed lol Sucks you had to get a new engine but from the pics the truck looks in great shape and you will have a almost new truck :)
Good luck with your new engine and truck :)

Since you don't have MDS you can run either 5W-20 or 5W-30. 5W-20 is what's recommended for my '06 Ram but 5W-30 is recommended in my '04 Durango with the same engine, both are Vin "D". I'd probably stick with the lower viscosity oil.
