I just had to use 4WD for first time this winter. I noticed a grinding/clunking noise from the front left while turning in 4WD. If I am going straight it seems not to make any noise. Any ideas what I need to look at? I am no mechanic but can generally follow directions especially with pics.

Thank you,

Steve

I had something similar happening on my 2500, but it would also do it in 2wd. Turned out I had an axle u joint going out in the front left.

Is testing this U Joint the same as for the drive shaft? Block the wheels, put the truck in Neutral and check for movement? Or is there another way to test for it?

Thank you,

Steve

Any suggestions on testing the u joint?

Also if it is the U joint, can it be replaced without taking the Wheel bearing off? Wish I knew this was going the beginning of summer when I replaced the wheel bearing.

Thank you,

Steve

Could be a CV axle, sign of a worn out cv is loud clicking when turning

How do I test the front axle U joint?

If I drive 200 - 250 miles a week, any chance I can make it til warmer weather to change, working outside in Southern Vermont.

Rock the wheel back and forth. Spin the wheel . If it grinds constant, you will need a new hub assembly. If it is clicking more then likely a CV joint.

^ The OP has a 2500.... pretty sure it's a u joint, not a cv.

I could be wrong though, but my 2500 has u joints at the front axles....

I jacked the truck up with the wheel turned so I could see and sure enough bad uJoint.

I had just done the wheel bearing on that side less than 6 months ago and it seemed fine. If(When) I have to replace the other wheel bearing, I think I am just going to replace the UJoint at the same time.

Thank you all,

Steve
