My 2013 3.6l was over heating so I had the thermostat replaced now it heats up to 3/4 before the radiator fan comes on and brings it back down to 1/2. When it hits 1/2 the fan turns off and begins its climb back to 3/4.if anyone has an idea what the problem is some input would be greatly appreciated

1- possibly air trapped in the motor.
2-faulty or incorrectly labeled thermostat.
3- wrong coolant type/color
4- fan relay switch

at one point in time this was a big thing with the 3.6l motor, it was found that most of the ones complaining about this issue were not actually overheating, it was a problem with the computer reading the temp gauge incorrectly and the dealer was having to re-flash the pcm to make it read correctly.

if it wasnt overheating before the thermostat change then its possible that the mechanic didn't burp the system, or even the radiator is plugged up, but since the fan isn't kicking on before it gets to 3/4 of the way up the gauge im going to say that the pcm needs to be re-flashed and that you aren't actually overheating

Cool I'm going to try and burb it after work.can I do it with the rad cap off or does it need to be done at the thermostat bleeding valve

IMO it is easiest to do it from the rad cap but make the rad cap the highest point. Jack the front end up, use car ramps or park on a hill. Run it until the thermostat is fully open and all the air is out.

Or... you can do it the right way. Remove the bleed port plug while cold and fill the reservoir until it comes out of the bleed port. That will displace any air in the block. Reinstall bleed plug and service reservoir to proper level. That is what bleed port is there for.

So I wasn't able to take the bleed valve out. it seems to be made of plastic and is an odd shape and I didn't feel like breaking it. I tried parking it on a steep hill and it did take a little more fluid but still the same results.im wonering now what the running temperature should be.the digital screen says 100c is half but on the gauge it says 3/4 and maybe it does need to be flashed and its not really over heating?

The trucks normal running temperature is 225 deg

There is actually a tsb on the 3.6 somewhere about this, the dealer fixed mine

Hahaha nice.thanks I appreciate the help.So with the gauges reading different do you think the best option right now would be to have it flashed.and is that very expensive to have done or is it a pretty quick fix once I bring it to the dealer
