I was reading the specs online and it said that the Power Wagon has a lower payload and towing capacity when compared with the standard 2500.
Is this true and why?

It is true and it’s because of all the added equipment on the Power Wagon. Different springs, electronic sway bar disconnect, winch, etc etc.

The main reason is because of the softer suspension setup, mainly the coils for better off road handling

Make sure you do a TON of research before committing to any new Ram 2500/3500. It’s incredible how many options they have and how easily it is to get what seems like a great truck that has only 200 more pounds of carrying capacity than a fully equipment GMC 1500!

If you want an off-road toy, forget towing. If you want towing, forget off-road toy. You have to be really specific with the Ram’s to get max payload ratings. Even then it’s best to lookup the VIN for actual base weight or check the tire sticker on the door on the lot for payload.

I’ve been researching moving up from my 1500 to a 2500/3500 and was amazed at how many combinations there are.

Well, if you want to tow anything that say, you'd need a 1500 for, the Power Wagon will still do it with ease and be more stable than a 1500. If you want to tow some really heavy stuff or regularly need a lot of payload then you'd want a regular 2500.

Ummm,, what? What GMC 1500 is in the same ball park at the Ram 2500/3500 regarding payloads?

Ahhhhh, makes sense. My bad. I have no idea what the "avg" payload of a PW is. Are they that close to a half ton?

Yes, i believe they are around 2,000 or so depending on configuration. Maybe south of that even

Mine is
2017 Ram Power Wagon Crew Cab
Maximum payload weight: 1,444 lbs
Maximum trailer weight: 9,790 lbs (with a weight distributing hitch).
GVWR: 8,510 lbs
GCWR: 17,500 lbs
The Tradesman with Power Wagon Package is significantly higher and the Laramie Power Wagon is the lowest of the three.

It's been compared to a heavy 1/2 ton due to the rate on the springs.

That's just some numbers. Have you seen a F150 or F250 go down the road lately? Any kind of load & they get the squats BAD! :roflsquared:
Ya just don't see Ram or Chevy going down the road like that unless somebody just has them completely over loaded.

In my 2014 F150 I had no problem loading up 1 ton of heater pellets in the bed or pulling a tilt bed trailer with 3 tons of pellets on it.

3thousand pounds of payload in a half ton... that’s rediculous. The axls are so small...I bet when there is 3k in the bed, the front wheels are almost off the ground... that V6 EcoBoost can’t be that heavy.

When Ford use to calculate their payloads, it was without spare tire, bumpers and radio (maybe even bed). lol

As of a few years ago all MFGs use J2807 standards. Ford lost the most. Ram actually gained FWIW...

I get a good laugh at the half ton comparison. That's the sort of thing someone without any hands on experience would say.

true, even if the payload numbers are close, they are two completely different beasts!
