I have an 03 1500.
Newer trucks and cars have radios that stay on for several minutes after the key is removed. Does anybody know if there is a mod that can be done on an '03 to make this happen?

Why would you want this? on the newer trucks it goes off as soon as you open the door.

This feature is controlled by the can bus system. Really the only way to do it on an older truck would be with some sort of timer that will hold power to the radio for a certain amount of time.

i got my 81 setup to do this. there is a box with a fuse and a capacitor hooked up on the ignition power wire to the stereo.

Yes they do, I have always liked the feature and miss it. I get hone, a good song is on and I want to listen to it, it is nice to turn engine off and still sit there listening to it without turning key to accessory position and missing some of it. Just wondered if it was easy to do.

I have a 1farad capacitor laying around but it might be kinda big.

i don't know what size the capacitor was. it is a old inline noise filter. i just hooked it up and it keeps my stereo on for 15-20 seconds after i shut the truck off.

It's a better choice to do it with a couple relays. Look into the diagram on this page:
http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_postsm.asp?tid=136948

Basically, when you turn your truck on, that energizes the 1st relay which gets its ground from the 2nd relay. When you remove your key, that 1st relay will stay energized because it thinks it never lost the Acc signal so your radio will stay on. When you provide the 2nd relay with a negative door trigger, it activates that relay which removes the ground from the 1st relay, which shuts your radio off. This will make it function nearly the same as the newer trucks.

Make sense? Lol
