Helped a friend install a remote start in his 03 4.7l 4 door, its one of the viper etc type remotes. it will start the truck, but will throw a code, P1698 doing it. And only when its warm will it start. All other functions are fine with it like the locks.

I know its a cluster code, and am familiar with installing these systems in a lot of vehicles, all so far have had no security key systems (this one does not have a security key either) and never had this issue.

Anyone else?

And where would be the best place to tap for tach output? We used the virtual tach, which is supposed to learn without tapping in. couldn't get it to learn the tach off of the tach signal wire.

Make sure the IGNITION 2 and ACCESSORY 2 wires are connected correctly. You usually have to use relays to use these as they generally only output a small current just enough to trigger a relay.

Just leave it on virtual tach. There’s really no need to have to hook up a tach wire on the newer ones. But in general, all the coil packs will have one wire colored the same. The other wire will be a different color on each coil pack. The different colored wire is the one you want to use. You can use whichever one is easiest to get to. Just do not connect to the common colored wire.

But like I said it’s much easier to just leave it on virtual tach.

We took it off of virtual tach because it would stay partially energized at the solenoid, and you could hear the buzzing as the the starter was slightly grinding.
