I have a 2008 1500 4x4 and it has play in the steering wheel. I’ve looked for an adjusting nut to take the play out on the gear box but mine doesn’t have one..? Does this mean a replacement of steering gear box..??

Doesn’t the truck have a steering rack not a gear box? I don’t remember when they swapped over. If it is a rack check the tie rods and the u joints for the steering shaft

I would say jack the front up and see if you can wiggle the tires around with the steering wheel locked in and trace out where it’s wiggling. That should be able to pin point it to if it is the rack or not. When you move the steering wheel is the steering shaft have play? Also is the rack responding to the steering wheel immediately.
