Thought I'd investigate where I'll be mounting my new bed step and realized that someone stole my spare! It must have been in the past couple of weeks because it was there when I changed the oil a few weeks ago.

So now I'll get a new one for Christmas. Ugh. Can one of you guys look under your truck and tell me what size yours is? I have a 2015 2500 MC with 20" rims, but I never got a look at the spare close enough to see what it was. I'm sure if I get one from a dealer it will cost me a paycheck, and I want to be sure a tire shop gets it right.

On an additional note, have any of you locked your spare? I'm not keen on wrapping it with a cable. I think Ram has a way to lock the winch don't they? Anyone have one they can share an experience of?

I have the same truck, unfortunately I can't get under it for another 12 hrs... I am 95% sure it is a 17" wheel. Best bet jump on Craig's list in your area and look for a used Ram 2500 wheel. Or go to a junk yard and get one off a truck. The wheel needs to be 17" or bigger to clear the brakes.

That would be awesome if you could confirm the size for me.

I have checked craigslist and eBay... No dice. I might have time to hit a junk yard tomorrow, but maybe I'll call a few to see what they have. The thing is, we just had a big snow and tire shops are slammed trying to keep people moving. I'm sure any decent tires at junk yards are cleaned out, which means I'd just be buying the wheel with the anticipation of changing the tire immediately. I need a decent tire as I tow, haul, and drive into the woods quite often.

Well, I've looked absolutely everywhere. Called two dealers for pricing, looked again on Craigslist and eBay, went to two junk yards and called three others, and called two or three tire shops. Best we could do was $250 for an aluminum rim and tire from Les Schwab (I have a buddy who works there). The rim is a 17", so we'll rotate the tires and see if it fits tomorrow. The 18" was $50 more for the rim, so hopefully it fits!

Are you sure it didn't fall off? I've lost them off trucks before. Not that it changes your current need. Just would hate to see you replace it and have the new one fall off.

That's odd cause on Craig's list in Cali & nevada they are every where.. not so much the spare but the actual wheel. Remember any factory 18 inch will fit from any 3rd or 4th gen.

I suppose that's possible. I've never had one fall off, but I have had it rattle. When I change the oil one of the things I do is make sure the spare is still tight. Had a loose one that sort of rattled on the last truck and it drove me nuts.

Yeah. There's a lot of wheels out here too but most are the factory 20's that people are replacing. They don't have the open hub to be lifted by the winch for the spare. The rest are 5 lug rims for 1500's. There was one that someone wanted $325 for that looked worn. I figured I could do better. I was hoping to find something sub $200 on CL, but no dice.

I still did better than the dealer that wanted nearly $600 for it.

The new one will have the factory lock, plus a cable and lock on it. I won't lose it, and it will be much tougher to steal. For $45 aim wondering why they don't put those locks on all new trucks.

Just a thought, if your insurance deductible isn't too high, maybe you could get a little price relief there?

Oh yeah I thought about it. My deductible is $1000, so $250 isn't bad. I'm just hoping the 17" one fits or the 18" will be more!

It's a spare. Just get a cheap steel wheel to hang under the truck. Use a cable and a padlock to secure it.

Nice. Didn't think about just getting the rim on eBay and getting a tire here. Still, 17" tires are cheaper than 18" and that's what I'll be paying for the aluminum 17" wheel. So if the 17" doesn't work ($140 rim $110 tire) then I'll order this one and get th next cheapest 18" tire ($140 rim from your link and $180 tire). This is why a collective is always smarter than any one.
Thanks!

If you are going the loose rim route, do not waste money on a new tire since it is a spare. Should be able to find a cheap used tire for around $50 or so.

I've looked into used ones around town. None in my size that any to give one tire. Bedsides that, the new one is $110 of the 17 fits. Since I tow for work, tow for camping and road trips, as well as occasional off-road hunting adventures, I'd feel better having a new one anyway. I was on a trip once where we blew a tire on the truck, and then one on the trailer 50 miles later! Mr Murphy seems to like me.

Besides, I'll have a new mopar spare lock as well as a cable and padlock on it. This one won't walk away. I just haven't ever thought about it before.

I bought yesterday a spare wheel in a junk yard in Daytona Beach, Fl. I paid $70 for a 17" steel rim with a very correct tire. That's well enough for a spare wheel I hope I will never use !
