From Alldata:

Place the selector lever in P (PARK) to be sure that the fluid level check is accurate.

From owner's manual:

5. Place the gear selector momentarily into each gear position (allowing time for the transmission to fully engage in each position), ending with the transmission in PARK.
6. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and reinsert it until seated.
7. Remove the dipstick again and note the fluid level on both sides. The fluid level reading is only valid if there is a solid coating of oil on both sides of the dipstick.
I stand corrected , just checked my owner's manual it does say to check the xsmn oil level in ( PARK ).
The manual also recommends to check at " normal operating temp " of 170- 180 °f. LOL ! I've towed 3500 lbs in the mountains on a 25 mile trip with 3-6%grades and the hottest I've seen my xsmn sump temp on the EVIC was 155°f .... I believe the 180° temps are normal for the 8 speed xsmn .

When I changed my fluid I did it incorrectly in N Nutral position with a sump temp at about 145° , I serviced to approx 1/8" below the "HOT " Position .... I just rechecked it at a sump temp of 130° in PARKand my level is about 1/4" below the HOT dot ... Looks like the results are very similar . I may heat up my fluid a bit and check again tonight after work.

Yep, if you look at the graph my post #12009, it shows your level @130F should be between .5-.2" below the Hot min fill hole.

Oh, it's a PDF file. May be a little tricky to open on your phone, depending on your file-type defaults.

Just read the same thing in my owner's manual and I stand corrected as well. However I thought I saw on the dipstick it said check in neutral?

**** if that's the case I might have overfilled it....

@R.L.K. @Rampant, this is what it says right on my transmission dipstick. I know for a fact that the RFE transmission pump doesn't run while in park so that would make a difference in fluid level.

So.....do we go by the owner's manual or the dipstick[emoji848]91191a7ca17e2e331750c88edf32a86b.jpg

FF works great as a cable lubricant. I hit my hood release cable, gearshift cable, and parking brake cables every 6 months or so. The joys of New England Winters and rock salt...

Also works great on door hinges and releases.

I would go with the dipstick on the trans over the owners manual for sure.

...Out of curiosity - what is the difference between the Royal Purple 10-48 filter and the Royal Purple 20-820?

Size, 10-48 is smaller supposedly for 14 and newer trucks because of the electric power steering rack, however the 20-820 fits on all years and is larger in size. Some guys here are running the 20-820 on their 14 and newer trucks

Well I've done it both ways now and got similar results ....me personally I prefer in N Nutral while the pump is running , this way I feel yields more accurate results due to while in operation D drive or R reverse the pump is running ...

Yeah I agree. I'm going to continue doing what I've been doing which is checking it in neutral. I usually fill it to the lower part of the dipstick anyway because my trans runs so cool. That way there will be room for expansion if the trans heats up while towing

Just a reminder that people do listen and do appreciate all the info that everyone gives which is why I have this combo being put in my truck. Even though it is hard to keep up with sometimes in this thread. Thanks again for the solid info with leg work behind it.cbcf1796effdd152b8e5310a321849bf.jpg

Not sure if this has been posted but cool stuff:

Oil Filter Comparison Study - GM Truck Central

Damn, best post in the syn thread, did you guys catch this? They take a filter and after the oil passes through the branded filter it goes through the test paper. The cleaner the paper, the better the actual filter filters. What a find and what a test. Haven't looked through all of them, but RP is killing it. Thanks Adrian!

This is the first validation that maybe that extra thick RP filter does more filtering beyond media rating.
