Yes, the oil will spill over if you don't prepare, just holding the filter even wont cut it. Twist filter until you see it go over sides, then cover with any bag. I personally say opt for 5w30, but there is a 5 percentish chance you through an oil code, in which case you would need to switch back to 5w20. The risk is worth it, 25% thicker visc means your metal to metal surfaces with enjoy more film strength. No downside especially since you will be using high flow Royal Purple filters.
Ok well had already bought 5w20 but maybe on my next oil change . I know the owners manual said 5w30 for towing so I imagine it would be good when not . Great advice thanks

So until I figure out what is going on, it appears that your drain back valve wont work. Which would mean your oil wont be close to your engine when you start it. Your oil may take an additional second to hit your lifters. Your oil pump pushes the oil past your drain back valve, when the oil pump stops the drain back valve covers the opening allowing the oil to stay in the lines. Clearly, your valve will not stop the oil from draining back to the pan. I think this is a major thing found by Ram Forums nutshell, I wouldn't use that filter.

5w20 is perfectly fine as well, especially if you have a drain back valve problem, oil will travel faster.

Well doesn't synthetic oil keep everything coated were as cold starts it takes a bit to get the oil circulating ?
I mean if these filters are causing engine wear on cold start ups there going to have some major law suits going on . Why is redline and RP both producing them this way now ?

No oil stays on your metal parts, because when you turn your truck off the metal is over 200 degrees plus still, it all goes back to the pan. If your oil has Moly, you have a element protecting the metal, but it isn't as good as flowing oil. Redline doesn't make oil filters. I could go into the benefits of synthetic oil, but it would be pages I already have done in this thread. Go read the thread, most guys like reading it, and if you have any questions you need answering if I have the answer I would be glad to. I think what we have is a lab that makes many brands that has inadverantly used the wrong drainback, or put it in upside down.

I've already started my oil change so If indeed it does cause engine damage to my truck there will be new oil filters out that'll have my name on them instead lol .
Wish me luck I'll keep everyone posted as far as premature motor wear.

There is a good chance you wont even know anything is a miss, stay tuned to this thread for answers on that. Some oil filters still don't even have drain back valve, it isn't a huge deal but for an engine prone to have lifter issues, I would try to get a filter with a good valve in the future.

What oil did you use? Redline oil have the highest organic moly content, you could always put that in as your seventh quart to ensure you have good moly for your cold starts.

That's what I bought was red line 5w20 so hopefully that'll help .
Your oil filter bag tricked worked really well . Got it off wiith only very little spillage . It would of been really messy without it think I filled half the bag with oil
And man the oil was hot lol !
Well time to add the redline ...

Quick question , so I put 7 quarts in then let it run then sit for about 5 minutes . Checked the oil and its up to the full mark ? Thought I would need to top it off from what the oil filter holds . So I'm guessing 7 quarts and I'm good to go ?

Is that the original mopar filter ?
Looks like the drain back valve is unseated ?

Mine looks exactly like yours ?
You can clearly see the rest of the valve . It does appear to be installed upside-down? ff9c7cb2982ce874beb5ece70e855c4a.jpg852c787c6d2efb2357113c3bee4af5d3.jpgb6d181b27623ecc1c73e0bffee106147.jpgd10cbe36db027773884500a5ba714dd3.jpg

Does yours have these #s on it ?

@ The Factor .
You installed yours like this right ?
Have you driven it & and let it set for a while and restarted? If so did you hear any lifter chatter ?

I could be wrong but I think that is the build date. I have a RP filter for my ACR that I've had a while and it is stamped 61713 08:51

I'll post a pic of it
