Hey guys,

So I bought my ram used and the previous owner did something to the paint. It almost looks like he buffed deep swirls into portions of my truck and then he buffed through the paint on other spots...Its hard to see but they almost look like smears/rub marks. It also has rub marks that look like dirt but its discolored paint. It might be on of those things that I notice the most because shes my truck but it is bugging the hell out of me. I'll attach photos below. I know how to wax/glaybar my vehicle but I don't know how to fix this problem. I have a feeling I am stuck with this but well see...

I dont even know what would cause this!

Take it to a professional detailer and have them measure the thickness of the paint in those spots. You'll be able to better determine what you need to do after you find out how much paint/clear is left.

I'm not seeing much in those pics. From what I do see, and I don't know it it's what you're describing, it almost looks like there's a blend line where a panel was spray painted up to ...and then they wetsanded and tried to buff the line where the old and new meet. That would be amature work in and of itself if that was the case, that's not how you'd do a repair. Or maybe it's like you say and they tried to buff the paint and buffed through the clear. Clear itself isn't that easy to just buff through, even thin OEM clear, you gotta really be derilict in your work and lay into a certain area with a buffer. But, of course, in the hands of an ape, anything is possible.

Yeah, take it to a couple body shops, see what they say. I'd recommend local shops where you can talk to an owner who's been doing it for 20 years, not high-throughput chain collision shops where you're talking to some guy or gal who are basically estimators. Plus the guys I've always talked to seem to be trained by experience (and insurance agents) to not say a whole lot for fear that people would have them redo something. Paint problems can always be fixed/redone given enough money.
