The tires that came with my truck were stock sized 265/70/17 BFG all-terrains. Overall HWY mpg was around 22.5 [overhead/which is almost spot on with my hand calc] at 69mph (1930-50RPM-my sweet spot).. Well yesterday I found an almost new set of some BFG rugged trail tires, same size, for dirt cheap... Cheaper than 1 new a/t lol. So I had them put on.

On my way to school this morning I looked at my overhead and saw an astounding 23.6!! There was no wind, on a flat HWY, no one in front of me, etc... I even got a video of it because I was a bit freaked out lol.

I know these tires are MUCH more street mannered and a lot less aggressive, but could it make that much of a difference??

I was going to say the same thing about the heavier tires. My Terra Grapplers are freaking heavy as crap and my mpg definitely suffered when I put them on. They were also larger than stock of course. When I have to put tires on again I'll be looking for something that is about the same style but lighter if possible.

Probably a stupid question, but along with the extra weight, would the aggressive tread also cause more drag?

tire width effect mpgs I know that, I could see some tread patterns being worse then others. Also things like my bumpers dont help out. They expose more of the tire to produce extra drag as well as lifts.

Tread plays a big part in drag.

Different tires have different coefficients of friction
I won't get into it since I bore you guys with to many numbers already lol

I used to have Bridgestone dueler alenza tires on my D and they were insanely efficient. You could feel they were just smooth nice riding. They are not aggressive at all though. I love all terrains always have. They are not for mileage they are for being able to handle it all and why I like them.

Michelin is the best tire for mileage due to low rolling resistance.
