I just purchased a 2001 Ram 1500 4x4 5.9 with the Off Road and Tow Package (posted a picture over in the intro section).

I will be using it for towing a 20' camper. I want to make sure it is in top shape.

I'll be dropping the tranny pan this week and replacing the filter, changin the differential fluid, new air filter, inspecting the plenum gasket.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Tire pressure, and tire condition. Just make sure they are not cracking, have bulges, or low. Also shut the overdrive off when towing.

Truck came with near new Firestone AT's
Belts were checked by my mechanic before purchase
Installed a new brake control module
Installed new break away system on the trailer

I believe the rear diff is a 9.25 and I have 4.10 gears. Should I use synthetic gear lube? Splurge and go with AMSOIL Severe gear lube and their limited slip additive?

Yes to the amsoil .. great lube for our diffs

Also check you have clearance hooked up with your mirrors , if not go to a auto zone and get the cheap clip on extenders for now , and when you get back look into tow mirrors .

Most of the guys have hit it...

Check all lubes and fluids... Don't forget brake fluid and power steering fluid. Make sure to setup your weight distribution hitch properly. Makes a world of difference. I love dragging around my 31' Jayco Eagle...
