I just recently purchased a 24' tag along camper. When I pulled it home the trans temp light came on. Well I let my parents take the camper and my truck out this weekend and they said it pulled just fine and the temp light never came on. Well I picked the camper up, about half way home the trans light came back on. I have used this same truck to pull my old 5th wheel camper and never had an issue. The roads are a lot steeper with a lot of hills where I live compared to my parents. The only difference other than the terrain was I used the A/C and he did not. I also had the trans rebuilt about 14 months ago, in order to have a warranty on the trans I had to buy an external cooler so I did. Would the trans cooler be to small? It's only about 8"x8" maybe just a tad bigger. Also I know the cooler would be hot but when the light came on i pulled over and the cooler was so hot I couldn't even get close enough to touch it. The cooler that was put on was by the garage, I did not pick it out or have any input on it. The truck is a 2000 Ram 1500 with the 5.9 360. Thanks for any advice.

If your trans temp light came on your trans is going to be going out soon.

You might be able to save it by replacing the fluid, filter, deleting the cooler line check valve and installing a secondary cooler.

When it was rebuilt they deleted the check valve as well as putting an external cooler on it. I was thinking that either the external cooler they put on isn't big enough to cool it, or there is not enough air moving through it. And it only does it with the a/c on. With the external cooler mounted on the condincer i was thinking it is just not cooling. I hope it does not need to be rebuilt again. I am two months past the warranty on the trans.

That's what I was thinking as well. I was thinking the heat from the condenser its mounted to and the trans fluid was just to much heat for that little thing would cool. Thanks for your helping

Picked up a larger cooler today, going to install it and go for a drive and see if it fixes it.

If it is still an issue you could install a 8" fan on it.

That is tiny and the fact that it is pressed up against the condenser isn't helping your issue. The guys that did my transmission added one on my truck also. Here are some pics. I pull quads in a enclosed trailer or my car trailer with something on it and never have a issue with temps.

Doesn't touch the condenser

i also think your trans cooler is too small. i think you should also mount it as low as you can in front of the rad so that it can cool better. i don't know about the newer trucks but on my 81 the air that gets pulled though the bottom part of my rad by my electric fans seems much cooler than the air that comes through the top.
