I own a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd Laramie and a 1999 Dodge Ram van 3500 2wd. I was wondering if the transmission in the van is the same as the truck and I could swap them out. The transmission went out on the van and the frame of the van is badly rusted through on the front end. It has several other issues and its not really worth the effort because of the crap frame. I was considering removing the transmission before I junk the van to rebuild. Never done it before but thought it would be fun to learn.

    Can they be swapped?

They will bolt right up as long as they are both either the 5.9 or 5.2. Wait for dapepper to tell you which pieces you need to swap, if you need to swap.

    5.2/5.9 v8s are swappable. 8.0 v10/5.9 diesel to the v8s not possible.

98 46re to 99 46re only issue is going to be flexplate for correct engine and this isn't an issue if both are 5.9 v8s

Would the 5.2 have a flate plate I could put on the trans from the 5.9?

    Just to verify, van is a 5.2 v8 and the 3500 is a 5.9 v8 correct?

If that's the case, to use the 5.2 trans you would need to use the 5.9 flexplate, which you should have in the 3500 already

The van is a 5.9 and I would be moving that trans to a 5.2

Well the 5.2 flexplate then. Not a big deal

Is the flex plate already on the truck I'm moving it to?

Should. If the trans and stuff in the 5.2 hasn't been pulled it'll have it. Otherwise your guess is good as mine lol
