I want to know what the ride quality is like between a dually and singly, regardless if hauling or not. Let's say a 3500 Cummins.

But...

Both are brutal unloaded and both are a lot more tame in their element.

The better question is why do you ask?

The dual will certainly "grab and hit" more road surface in general but a 3500 is a 3500 and unloaded it is "less tame"

The dually has less PSI in the tires and the wide track sometimes means they ride over potholes that a single wheel would fall in.

I hated riding in the 3500 unloaded. Both will be rough. When I had my f350, I actually had to keep 500 to 800 lbs in the bed to make it a little more manageable.

Either configuration will be about the same unloaded.

Its a 3500 it is going to ride ruff! If you are worried about it you might want to just stay with a 1/2 truck.
I have had 5, 1 ton duallys RC, QC and CC and 4 ,3/4 tons and they ride ruff.
Its like back in the day asking if that 454, 440 or 460 got good mileage, if you have to ask your not going to be happy .

Personally, when going up to the 2500 and 3500 and higher, I would worry more about what your pulling than the ride quality.

my 01 3500 QC dually 4x4 with 206K miles rides and steers far, far better than my 09 furd f350 single tire crew cab work truck with only 12K miles.

Can you see driving such a truck 3000 miles from the East Coast to Californy?

Good to know. I'll keep it in mind.

I understand about the tame factor, but I ask because I don't know what would best suit me. I know I want a 6 mt, and ideally a 2 door with the bigger cab.
So, now I'm thinking more of an swr, instead of a dually. But then, what work could I get with the setup?

Good point, but did you ever steer away from a pothole, just to have a rear single wheel fall in, anyway? Just asking.

If you are looking and a 2500 will work for you, in 14 they started using a 5 link in the rear with coil springs. I have a 15 and the ride is much nicer than my 04.5.
