I know this is a very common problem with the 5.7 but really haven't heard much of an issue with the Ram 6.4 motor. The both appear to use the exact same manifold but have read that the 6.4 uses better bolts in select areas. Understand that WAY many more 5.7 Rams are on the road but curious if anybody has experienced this issue with the 6.4.

Can whomever voted "yes" please elaborate a little. Year, mileage, cylinder, etc. Thanks.

I've never heard of a single report. That doesn't mean there hasn't been a failure but I think it is safe to say the 6.4 doesn't suffer from that problem wide scale.

I have been a mechanic for 10 years now at the same garage and we have many Ram 5.7 customers. I cannot recall one broken bolt in a manifold that I have dealt with on them. I actually never knew there was a problem with the manifold bolts on the 5.7s. I used to have an 2005, but I put headers and all new bolts on at about 30k miles. The worst are the Ford V8s and 10 cylinders and then Chevy in second.

I had a broken exhaust manifold bolt on an 08 Aspen Hemi. It happened around 89k miles. It sounded like a loud lifter tick when cold and went away when warmed up.

I bought a new heat shield and all the bolts and did the job in under 45 mins through the wheelwell.

Had a previous 4.7L V8 that did the same. Other than those two minor issues, both engines were flawless with well over 100k miles when sold.

I read somewhere that the 6.4L uses aircraft grade hardware on the engine (allpar?). 30k miles on my 16 6.4L and zero engine issues.

Had read the same on Allpar so was curious if that was the culprit on 5.7 motors. But they also use revised head cooling design with better stability cast from 356 aluminum. So seems possible that there is also less thermal expansion in the 6.4 heads, which I assume is part of the core issue.

I had a broken manifold bolt on my 2011 1500 Hemi. Happened around 40k-50k. Had it fixed around 85k (under warranty). Also had them do the spark plugs while they were in there. Saved me over $100 on the plug replacement.

No exhaust manifold bolt issues on my 6.4. Did have all of the driver side lifters replaced last month. 45k on the truck. A lot more power now too.

They are different manifolds between the 5.7 and 6.4

Thanks for the feedback. Would be interested in hearing any comments from your dealer on the cause. Not that it would likely be any different than we already know, but curious.

Did you have the tick for a long time? I have a tick when cold, only for 30 seconds or so. not lifter noise. I had a ford 5.4 that went through 3 manifold's in 1 year.I know the sound.

It's had a tick for awhile now that was deffinently coming from the lower half but since it got cold here in MI it started to have a squeak along with it like metal rubbing. Over the phone they just said they had to order a couple bolts for the manifold, I'll find out more this afternoon.

I also have a slight squeak at the same time, 30 seconds . I stopped by the service dept they couldn't hear it unless I leave it overnight. There is still a slight tick when warm,THEY SAID WAS NORMAL. I live 86 miles from where I got the truck. PIA. Let us know what they found.

Got it back. Both manifold studs on cylinder 8 was broken. Replaced manifold and all studs. They said it was common in the 5.7 and this was the first 6.4 they've seen.

Wow. No theories from them on why they broke? I thought the 6.4 ran different hardware than the 5.7... Yours is the first report I've seen online of this happening to a 6.4.

They had no clue on why but was happy it was the passenger side because there is a lot of stuff they have to remove to do the drivers side

If you have a ticking sound check it. The ticking that developed in mine is gone.

Reviving this thread. My truck is headed into the dealer tomorrow. It developed a tick and has steadily gotten louder. It sounds like an exhaust leak. There is no tick at startup but once warm it is loud. It's not as loud as my buddies 1500 with a broken manifold bolt but given enough time it probably will be.
