Just got a 31 foot travel trailer in Nov. and am planning on taking the family out to the Black Hills and Yellowstone this summer. I was wondering if anybody could share their experiences about the campgrounds, where you stayed etc. Are they crowded, what are the facilities like, is it hard to get in and out of certain places? Also any sites we shouldn't miss. Haven't been out that way since childhood so it will be like the first time. Thanks!

We did 3 Flags RV Park in Blackhawk just outside Rapid city. Absolutely top notch. They really participate in the Passport America thing. Nicest people ever and all the amenities are great. Then for Yellowstone we did Grand Teton RV Park. Not so great. Hope you have a great time. Try the Huckleberry Margaritas at Jackson Lake Lodge.

If you're going to Yellowstone...Book very early or everything will be full in the park...There is a small campground first come first served just outside Roosevelt gate....If you get the chance drive over the Beartooth Scenic byway

    Have fun

Thanks for the info. Now I just have to plan the route.....and wait for the snow to melt. Has anybody towed anything heavy through the Bighorn Mountains before? Shortest route is US 14 but I might wimp out and go around.

I think we took 90 from Rapid city to Billings. Then dropped down to Cody and went in the East Entrance. Cody is awesome too btw. Rodeo every night and the Buffalo Bill Museum has one of the most extensive firearms collections in the world.

That sounds like a great trip. Maybe going around isn't such a bad idea after all.

Yeah. We also stopped and saw Devils Tower and then in Hardin, MT and saw Little Bighorn. More thoughts for ya.

Almost went to Yellowstone, but the kids (2-7) had other plans. We had a great time travelling from Portland to northern MN where I grew up (06 Duramax and 31 ft TT). On the way there we went to Mt. Rushmore and had the most fun at a KOA with hot spring pool in Bozeman. On the way back though, the kids were fried, so we decided to postpone to another time when they are older and can enjoy it more (and maybe remember it). Its on our list for things to do in the next 3 years. Sometimes kids, all they need is a hot spring pool LOL. So we were planning on going south from Bozeman.

    Best of luck to you.

Here it is. We got late late year so we haven't even used it yet. We're hoping to take a practice run somewhere Memorial weekend before the Yellowstone trip. Its a 16 hr drive from where we live so planning on hitting Devils tower on the way out and the Black Hills on the way back. Should be a great trip.
