I've cut these filters open(Purolator Boss PBL 24651, WIX XP 57899XP)in the recent past and am posting a few pics again, for arguments sake and visual for comparison to the Royal Purple 20-820.

The Purolator Boss PBL 24651 imo, is just as good or equal quality as the Royal Purple 20-820.

The by-pass valve on the Purolator Boss is different that it is fixed to the bottom of the filter using a spring retainer type clip instead of the traditional "leaf spring" by-pass valve set up that most of the other filters have.

The WIX XP 57899XP(Royal Purple 20-820 equivalent)has an altogether different by-pass spring. The filter media rests on an coiled spring, unlike the leaf spring style, and the by-pass valve is independently spring loaded.

The filter media on the Purolator Boss PBL 24651 has instead of an "metal screen" it has an synthetic type mesh that is very resilient to being torn/ripped. The media is also very competitive as the RP 20-820. The "SmartFUSION TECHNOLOGY" on the Purolator Boss is rated 99%+ on dirt removal capacity and 15,000mi/24,000km.

The WIX XP 57899XP filter media is an carbon copy of the Royal Purple 20-820 having the metal screen mesh on the filter media

The bass plates on the WIX and Purolator Boss have only six inlets compared to the Royal Purple 20-820, but are rather large, so I wouldn't think that that would hamper oil flow, idk.

Over all, IMHO, these two filters in comparison to the Royal Purple 20-820 are a good quality match.

Thank you sir. So just to be clear, if I wanted the same size filter as the RP 20-820 and the Fram XG2, the Purolator Boss # for that filter would be: 24651? I'd like the larger(est) boss, not the smaller one.

Yep.

The Purolator Boss PBL 24651 is the larger and same in dimension oil filter as the Royal Purple 20-820 and FRAM XG2/FRAM FE2 SYNTHETIC Endurance/WIX XP 57899XP/MOPAR 899.

Another pic for visual comparison of the FRAM FE2 SYNTHETIC Endurance to the Royal Purple 20-820 is an carbon copy exact in quality with the difference being the amount and size of the inlet holes, eight on the Royal Purple 20-820 and six on the FRAM FE2.

I would not hesitant to use the FRAM FE2 SYNTHETIC Endurance oil filter. I might give it try and it's cheaper in price and on the shelf at Wal"-Mark" ...
did you cut those open?

I gritted my teeth and visited Bob's to see what the goofs were saying about Fram Endurance Oil Filters as a replacement for the degraded Ultra XG's.

After reading a bunch of pages, my take was the consensus was generally this is a good replacement that simulates the original Ultra XG, with caution to check the center tube louvers for full punching openess. I also saw some state they are made in Mexico. This would be a significant change before "First Brands" bought Fram, they were always made in the USA when owned by Allied Signal previously.

My read of all this is First Brands cost-reduced a premium filter by outsourcing it where it's not always made correctly.

I remember 15 years ago when Fram so proudly announced the Ultra XG series being made exclusively in the USA.

Cheap is good. Always. No matter what else.

... and the same for the Amsoil AE 011 oil filter.

Yep.

I've cut open quite a few for my own visual look see, but didn't keep all of them, and also the one's I've used for internal inspection and threw them away as well ...
thanks for the contributions

Take a die grinder to all the sharp edges you can get at on the Pac Brake kit. Sharp corners and oil flow don't go hand in hand, and after looking one of their kits over close,i'm not impressed with it,especially for the cost. If you haven't bought the Pac Brake kit yet,i'd seriously consider this set-up instead, but upgrade the hoses and fittings to 5/8" ( -10).Allows you to use the big old style 3/4-16 filters like the 30-8 filter. You get twice the filter capacity, and less pressure drop across the 2 filters.

Will have a look. I like the fact it uses the good old and cheaper filters but it looks like more work to make it fit. I don't want straight fittings either at the engine, won't work well with the RHD conversion and its flipped steering rack.

Any farm implement dealer can make you hoses with pretty well any fitting you require,so the hoses don't present much of a problem. Even you guys in Aussie land will have a farm implement dealer, lol.

I get that and I appreciate the advice, but that does mean more work, more travel, more hassle hence more time I really do not have at the moment. I doubt there is a farm implement dealer within 100kM of me! And if they are the chances of them being open outside business hours is unlikely. I really wanted a simple bolt on solution that I don't have to even make up an attachment bracket for. I do however really like the idea of the twin imperial thread filters although they are not available to me in Australia in Royal Purple brand. My biggest concern with the Trans-dapt kit is where the two outlets end up when the screw on bit is tight. If they end up in the wrong spot when it tightens it will be very hard to get the right angle pieces screwed into it, and get the hoses to run easily. The Pacbrake unit you can place it where you want and screw the holding nut up.

What would be ideal is the Pacbrake engine end and the Trans-dapt filter housing. Which is do-able I guess, Trans-dapt sell the dual filter relocation base by itself as part number 1030. Would just need some adapters to make the Pacbrake hoses screw into the Trans-dapt housing and make up an attachment bracket. I reckon I could probably even use the Pacbrake attaching bracket and modify it to mount the Trans-dapt filter support onto it.

I wonder if the actual filters used with the twin kit can be a cheaper unit that I can easily get locally. Like these:

... imperial thread filters. Haven't heard that in awhile, usually just standard thread where I'm from.

Most of the world is Metric today. Imperial stuff is still around and entrenched but lost more metric today than anything else. The imperial Z9 filter is a very common filter though, just about every old Ford in Australia used it.

If you can get a 20-820 filter on the truck now, you'll be okay with a swivel end fitting, that screws onto a n!pple.Install n!pple onto filter adapter, tighten filter adapter down, then install the female swivel end hose fitting on n!pple. Post up a few pics of the bottom side of your truck showing clearances around the filter

After seeing the recently posted YT video comparing oil filter performance I ordered 2 Purolator Boss "oversize" filters comparable to the Royal Purple 20-820. Purolator PBL24651.

I currently have PUP 5w-20 and the 20-820 filter in my 5.7L with an OCI due soon. Might try the Purolator this time. Fewer intake holes, but oval and quite large.

RP 20-820 weighs 490 grams and PBL24651 weighs 524 grams. My oil always seems to turn coal-black after just 500 miles or so while the oil in my wife's Eclipse ( I4, 2.4L ) is still the color of honey after 7 months and almost 2000 miles.

I've lost no oil and added nothing to gas or crankcase. Also ordered a new PCV valve as I believe I'm still running the factory unit at over 107,000 miles and 10 years. I can't find where it was ever replaced.
UOA will be sent to Blackstone at next OCI.

I did put photos up here of it on post 984, page 50. 20-820 won't fit. Still running a 10-48. I re-read your posts from back then to jog my memory of that kit and the swivels would probably work. Will go and do some more wok on it.

Help me understand, so the reason being is, your truck is or has been "converted" to right hand drive, and that is what/why you cannot use the larger diameter oil filter? Maybe I missed something.

They are remanufactured. under licence and approval from Stellantis. They are sold as new vehicles. The process on the 1500 DS saw the steering rack flipped so the bulky section of it is directly under the oil filter. Makes it near impossible to get a bigger filter in there.

If you import a used car with the steering wheel on the left, can you register it and legally drive it.Here in Canada there's a pile of imported cars with right hand steering, and they aren't required to convert them to be legal.

We can for older stuff, but not new. I can import a '57 Chevy or a 1988 Chevy/GMC or similar as LHD. But newer stuff cannot be done. Holden had GMC Suburbans converted in Mexico from memory in the late 90's and sold as Holden Suburban as new vehicles. They also had GMC 2500 cab-chassis around the same time converted locally for Ambulance use. Ford were getting F250's converted in Brazil and sold here as new cars between 2002 and 2007. I almost bought one of those, I wanted a single cab 4x4 auto but they only sold them as a 6cyl diesel manual, I wanted either the 5.4L V8 or the 7.3L TD V8, I had to spend a lot more on a dual cab to get either of those engines with an auto box.
