So when a dusting to 2" of snow in southeastern NY ended up being 8 inches and the people in charge of road clean up were unprepared, I took a road trip .
I completely understand what people in the other thread on this topic are saying for very specific situations, but this transfer case can handle most that's thrown at it. I drove about 30 miles on mostly unplowed roads, my Duratracs are 5 days from being replaced, and I had no issues or any overheating or anything. Here's my one observation that may add a different experience than I've seen described regarding 4Auto vs 4Lock:
4Auto, cruising down the road and needing to turn onto an on ramp or onto another road, and you definitely notice the truck waiting for a slip before the clutches engage and get the front wheels turning. Definitely takes a moment to engage and you definitely feel the slip but it still happens fairly quickly.
The same situation in 4Lock and I felt absolutely nothing. It may have been doing its thing with engaging, waiting for spin, whatever, but it was entirely unnoticeable to me. Multiple times stopped at red lights on the way up a hill and there was no "spin" before the 4 wheels engaged together or that miserable traction control feeling I'm sure we all have experienced.
Just throwing into the discussion that I experienced a noticeable difference between auto and lock, both doing exactly what I expected them to do and served their purpose under the different situations I was driving in.
