they look for a cat with a mirror under the truck. some of my car buddies have gotten away with a resonator that could pass as a cat. or you could have one gutted.

as for the CEL, there are ways around that too, including a tune. i've seen special adapters that attach to O2 sensors that supposedly can assist with preventing CELs. CEL is auto fail though.

If you bought your truck new in Jersey then you have 5 years before inspection. If you bought it out of state, you are screwed if you pull off the cats. Welcome to New Jersey. The small power increase isn't worth the inspection troubles you will have. Leave the cats in place.

That’s if it’s new. Otherwise it would be every two years. Just goes by your inspection sticker and how much you want to potentially swap exhaust parts

My father has a tuned 07 Z06 with longtube headers and catted x-pipe and passes inspection no problem. Different vehicle but I would consider a tune if you’re changing those parts anyway.

Yes, ofcourse id tune it... just looking to see if there was any way it would pass by itself. really seeing if anyone has actually done it. The Z06 probably falls under a different category due to its age.

Its not the sniffer, its the visual that will fail. Im in PA and had longtubes on my chevy. I passed inspection for 3 or 4 years but was very selective about the shop I took it to. Had the same shop inspect it every year because I knew they didn't really do a visual. It was tuned so, rear O2's were eliminated so no codes.

I'm specifically asking for Jersey. LTHs shouldn't fail an inspection here by themselves but a sniffer theyd def fail

You will fail without a Cat. You could always try tearing the guts of a Cat, that's what a few of my buddies did. Unless you could find a shop that does State Inspections that would pass it. That's what I used to do with my Charger and Dart. Last I heard though is that even those guys were getting more stricked. At least the ones that would still do inspections.......?

He means NJ doesn’t have the sniffer. All they do is look to see if you have a catalytic converter and plug into your OBDII port to make sure there are no codes or error messages.

Those are the only two things you have to pass. In my post(s) above I suggested most of the options to work around it or through it.

You sure there are no sniffer tests? I'm hearing conflicting info on that. CEL is no problem, I know about O2 cheaters but id def use the tune, because I'm already set up for that. Do they make skid plates that cover that area? if that's the case then I'm golden!

I have a question, would you fail an inspection with the brake, abs and traction control light on and also with the airbag light on? Im curious because my 02 bmw covertible has a problem with the airbag sensor and abs pump and those lights are all on, luckily i live in Arkansas where there is no inspection, just curious if it would pass inspection in other states.

Positive. They even didn’t away with OBDI (sniffer applicable) and you just carry a letter from the DMV saying you’re exempt for anything built before 1996 (OBDII).

I’m new to this platform so I don’t know about the skid plate idea but I’m not new to questionably Earth-friendly vehicles.

Cutouts before cats?

You might be able to get lucky by gutting cats or using resonators in place.

However I have a friend who was failed at one station for having an AFTERMARKET cat. Like they’re the f’ing mod police. So it may vary person to person, day to day, mood to mood. Good luck.
