Yeah.... it's gonna take a bit more time to get a real good picture of what they do on the depreciation scale.

but the 2018 is a 4th gen with very little changes from 2017 so there is a lot of data to be able to determine the depreciation....the 2019's just came out. No data really available yet.

1 year isn't a good data point for depreciation. Vehicles depreciate a lot over their first year then slow down.

Buying ~<1 year old car used is always a great deal. Just have to find one and put aside any worries as to why the previous owner got rid of it so quickly. But they are not great indicators of the car's eventual depreciation.

There was actually 4 in a 250 mile radius when I checked a week ago.

Can get better deals new if you know how to haggle.

IMO cars depreciate faster than pickups.

I started looking towards a new truck when 15+ F-150's where still in the low 40's.
Some even 2wd.

Wait a year and see how much better the incentives get after GM/Chevy and Ford launch they're newest trucks and give FCA some time to work out a few bugs.

Don''t just consider the price... consider the cost. Also, consider that a used vehicle does not usually receive excellent care and maintenance.

These high priced truck's are not ussually abused unlike buying a mustang or a charger/ challenger

Already seeing $10-13k off MSRP right off the bat depending on trim, without even negotiating with the dealer. Not bad at all.

This 19 is the first new vehicle I've ever bought at this price point ......I've been buying certified pre owned Mercedes and BMWs for years.......as well as service loaners or cars that were tagged out to the manager, etc. There are plenty ways to buy a used one that had excellent care/maintenance. My last Mercedes was an 'off lease' for example and was leased, serviced, and turned in at one dealership and driven by a Dr. My 7 series as 'off lease' and leased, serviced, and turned in by a CEO at Durham electric. I'm not saying Dr/CEOs take better care........but at least I didn't buy one that was auctioned and sent across the US. I was able to see all the service/maintenance records from throughout the lease. My wife's current Mercedes was being driven by the General Sales Manager and I told him I wanted it. He said it's not for sale and I said "I WANT IT" .......and we got it for thousands off because it was 'used' with only 400 miles on it.

If the 19's follow the usual FCA curve, the drop in the first 2 years will be pretty steep. They level out with Ford and GMC after 4 years or so. Problem is that dealers jack up the prices so high on used models that you might as well shop and buy a new one.

Now might be a good time to buy new, either a 19 or an 18 like I did. FCA is taking lots off the sticker to motivate people to buy the last of the 18's and to move the 19's that are available, considering their lag in production of the 19's. I got almost 10K off my 18 Laramie with the ED. Made it a no brainer vs the f-150 v6 diesel limited at 62K.

The way to greatly reduce the cost of depreciation is to buy a 2 year old vehicle on the used market from a private party (so you get to see the service records).

By the way if you are buying the vehicle for business use it only needs a 6,001 GVWR and it can be new or used (new to you) to qualify for the Section 179 deduction with 100% of the purchase price written off in year 1.

Or go online and check Craiglist for a truck being sold by a private party. I would never ever buy a used truck from a dealer. I would have no way of knowing what problems the prior owner(s) had with the truck. It could have even been returned under the Lemon law. And Car-Fax is not going to provide useful information as to the condition of the vehicle's mechanicals or electrics.

In my neck of the woods lightly used trucks are almost always more than buying a new one once you haggle. I'm not sure if it's because there are so many that refuse to buy a new vehicle or they assume they can't afford one or that it's a waste of money b/c of the depreciation but the used market in my area holds folks hostage IMO. (not that those reasons don't have merit but with financing these days I don't think it's as cut and dried as in the past.)

I bought a 19 Bighorn with 800 miles on it. Was a dealer demo. Saved 14K off sticker.

I would have to say no. Even used, it'll still look like a Tundra.
